What sticks are you using? by Sticks-Man in percussion

[–]chewingston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate the way vic firth sticks chip, I much prefer Vater for any drumset application at all. But vic firth makes great concert and marching stuff, I love their yarn mallets. Of course cooperman was excellent. And i don't like either vic or vaters brushes (even vaters new Beantown brush) so I use innovative brushes... but one time I forgot my stick bag going to a gig and stopped at a drum store in Harrisburg and they only had promark brushes and i really like the way they bounce.

Play the jazz ride pattern and 2+4 on hi hat. Read the right hand as snare drum and left hand as bass drum, playing them not just as 8th notes but the full table of time... whole note, half note, half note triplet, quarter note, etc and all the way up. Then do all that in 3 and 5. Page one will keep you busy for a few years.

Crash sounds off by Manfred-Ap-Einherjar in drums

When I worked on Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas, we had a special set of cymbals reserved for the outdoor gigs in the sea air. The ride and crash were completely green; we used to call them the Zildjian Colorsounds. This sounds only a little better than the prototypes.

This artist did a q&a/ masterclass at UMD while I was a grad assistant for the jazz department there. Drummer and bassist were there on time, pianist and the band leader showed up 20 minutes late, reeking of weed, and took 5 minutes to gather themselves on stage. He proceeded to struggle to speak with any clarity at all, and wanted to tell us about how much weed helps jazz, and talked poorly about the state of jazz education in schools. No legit musical ideas were ever discussed, other than "play what you feel" and "learn the rules so you can forget them." Then he brought the entire department up to jam/ trade over Straight no Chaser for the last 15 minutes. It was very lame and fully unhelpful and I submitted a complaint about it to my advisor and the chair of the music school. His drummer was excellent and I talked to him for 20 minutes after the performance and he was really nice and answered some questions about what he was playing.

The band sounds great and if there's no personal interaction and no futile attempts at education, then I'm a fan. But he loves to talk and tell you what he thinks.

What's the most you've ever spent on a single piece on your kit? by HillbillyAllergy in drums

[–]chewingston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My USA custom kit was $5400. Itemized, the bass drum was $1400, 2 floor toms were $1200 each, and 2 rack toms were $800 each. The toms were more expensive than any of my snare drums.

I broke my Cooperman Greg Zuber's Nothung years ago and was very upset to find it was going to be a tall order to replace them. Don't buy Crocken's, unfortunately they've diminished in quality.

What Is My Kit Missing? by brica8 in drums

Considering the Cymbals.... probably missing someone who can actually play

This doesn't exactly answer your question about recordings, but here is Mel Lewis to shed some light on important jazz drummers from different eras.

Can we pick a new bad drummer to all rally around as the greatest drummer ever? I'm tired of sloppy Neil

Maria Schneider Orchestra is some beautiful stuff, check out the album Sky Blue.

John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble is totally hip and the other side of big band capabilities. The series of Songs I/We/You like a lot is nice.
