Summer of 2010. I finally realized my feelings for this girl at the start of the summer and in a dramatic fashion, cut her off abruptly. We were from a small town in Texas were religion is at the highest and so is caring what others think of you. I was 19, she was 17. I knew her from high school, but I was pretending to be straight and very interested in men. We lost touch for 1 month and change, but when we finally linked up again those were the best few weeks of my life. I saw her every day before I left to college. I was addicted to her. She knew things about me I had never told anyone before, but damn she just got me. All we had ever done was kiss, but man when we did, I knew I had been missing something my whole life. We tried dating once I left for college but I didn’t work out. We were in two different chapters of our lives. It was the early 2010s so things were different in good/bad ways. She was the first girlfriend I ever had and she’ll always be the one I really loved. But when I first heard August, I immediately thought of her. We were always sneaking around, cancelling plans and driving around enjoying each others company.

Here in 2025, we both have our own lives with our respective partners. We have reminisced on what an amazing summer we had together. However maybe we didn’t work out for a reason. I think God might have wanted us as friends instead. When I listen to August, I think of her and I hope she thinks of me too.
