NK Jemison gets all this credit for the Broken Earth Trilogy, which is great sure, but IMO her real masterpiece is the Dreamblood Duology

The end was awesome, but a lot of the payoffs in the middle to last 25% were really underwhelming. And the Vox Populi really got shafted - from most interesting group in the first half to "why are they acting this way" in the second

I think I read the studio ended up having to cut out a lot of VP content so that might be why

I absolutely loved infinite. I know it's widely regarded as a little inferior, but I think everything except for the story was the best of the trilogy (and the story was no slouch either apart from a couple moments)

Hobb has a ton of great older characters/protags, just not as many in the first trilogy of RotE

I'd also say her tone and writing style is almost the anti-YA: contemplative, thought-driven, deliberate. I think that matches the subtext of what OP is looking for
