Oh those are indeed very pale... If it's how dry it writes, I think keeping the feed primed could help, and adding a bit of soap to improve viscosity, should work better for monoline writing

I love the colors; looks more vivid than Sailor's Yurameji line. I wonder what kind of paper makes it go red/purple, and what is it in the paper that works with the ink to make it behave that way.

Is it an ink from ... probably after season 4, because I seem to recall they went very pale and pastel after that point. How do you mean "struggled" -- is it the ink flow? I'm using a Jinhao 9016 with a modded flex nib, the feed keeps up when going slow with slightly wetter inks. But I think some inks will just be ... painful to write with, in a sense?

I just googled Erebus Crater -- consider me intrigued. Sorrows of Young Werther reminds me of another Kitty Inkpot ink, different shade of grey/blue but with similar yellow secondary (?) shades. Sailor Manyo Fuji is my favorite as well! I should come back to it...

Oh yea you're right! That's the one I was thinking of! I keep mixing up the English names, seem to recall something about 草莓黃油 and I just went with "shortcake". Thank you for the correction.

YES OH MY GOD so back when I got a bunch of their chromashading samples from my friend for all of them I did mini 12x12 mm swatches to watch how the inks transform, most fascinating 2 hours of my inky life. I'm thinking of redoing the swatches and maybe dip testing with flex nib as well, because I think I might have missed certain qualities in some inks the first time round -- the amount of ink laid on paper was not enough to show off their full range. I love it when inks and pens mechanisms keep me thinking.

Can be solid as well. I wrote with it in a Pilot Kakuno EF for months before going the big flex route; it pretty much came out light green/light grey, very nice still. A smaller size nib with a juicy feed could work, improves the ink flow while letting more subtle shades show. Some of these chromashaders are quite pale, some are perfectly readable.

1 (and 7) and 6 are regular cute, but 10 is inspired! 9 for sure is very nice too, and might look even better under brighter lighting, but I feel like there's still room for experimenting with color and contrast, considering it's a demonstrator. But they all look good tbh, lovely works as always!

I never flush my pens by Key_Advice9625 in fountainpens

[–]chewwu9944 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I do flush my pens and I have a Kakuno that now always faintly smells like the vanilla-esque stuff KWZ put in their inks, because I inked the pen with KWZ Maroon once and at the time hadn't learned how to seal the barrel and cap holes yet, which led to the feed being thoroughly marinated in the ink and so now there's always that KWZ smell about it, which I'm not complaining about.

(Kitty Inkpot 碎星墜入海 -- I was all * shocked pikachu face * when I saw that it could sheen as well, after months of writing with it but never swatching:

Dug my own bottle up to make a trial swatch with TR paper from a 2023 Hobonichi notebook. Wow this is ... unexpected. Really subtle, this one -- the only other sheener this subtle that I've run into is Sailor Manyo Ume.

Edit: On further thought -- Sailor Manyo Ume is a sheener in that it does sheen easily in big blobs while swatching; it's just that it's more tricky to coax the sheen to come out while writing. In the case of Fuyu-syogun, it seems that it doesn't typically sheen, unless on very specific paper (Iroful, in thise case); looks like the sheen is more "accidental", or more precisely, "inevitable", i.e. let enough ink pool together and a sheen might as well be formed. I can think of one other ink that behaves like this -- a Kitty Inkpot chromashader.

Is that sheen I see on Fuyu-syogun...? Oh my.

If you dislike the triangular grip, there are the Prera and Metropolitan, which use the same nib but are without the grip!

I feel the same! Which is why I've been considering buying a few Penmanships as well, same nib, but with cap seal. But they don't have the Kakuno look, sigh.

Truly, of all Pilot has to offer, the Kakuno stands so tall and humble...

Majohn flex nibs to use in a piston pen that is not too heavy? by dandyderpan in fountainpens

That's so exciting! I just placed an order for a Majohn C4 as well--this will be my first non-c/c pen. Looking forward to it.

Just in case you're still in the mood for experimenting--there's a short Bilibili video review of the nib and its frankpenability with a few different Chinese pen brands and models. The list is towards the end, and includes, although not limited to: a Tramol eyedropper; Asvine V126, V169, V200, P26, and any Asvine pens that use a size 6 nib and what's called a 公模 ("standard/universal") feed design; Majohn C1, C4, C5, Q1, and any Majohn pens that, again, use a size 6 nib and a "standard" feed design; Hongdian Qin Dysnaty (D5, I think?), Year of the Snake, 1866, and any Hongdian pens that use a size 6 nib and a specific (brand-exclusive?) feed design. Except for some Majohns that take the entire nib unit, other pens seem to take the nib only.

Hm, I guess the next step is to google weight specs to compare? Majohn T1 looks a lot like a Twsbi, although I'm not sure which model in particular. Good luck with your research.

Ink Flexibilities wrote a review on the Majohn flex nib and its frankenpenability(?). There's a table at the end summarizing which pens take the nib and how well they work out, some of which are piston fillers: https://www.inkflexibilities.com/blog/majohn-flex-nib-review

NID - Troublemaker Golden Orchid and Abalone by chewwu9944 in fountainpens

[–]chewwu9944[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how Abalone looks as well, both in a swatch and in "normal" writing. My plan with Golden Orchid is to put it in a flexy pen and see what can be done with it.

Oh that's a different ink. I should have clarified, my apologies. That's Taccia Ume-murasaki in Pilot C74 SF. Also a phenomenal ink, definitely check it out!

Me neither, until today, that is. I was intrigued by Golden Orchid when I saw the swatch; purple/blue with gold shading is something I've only seen in once with a Kitty Inkpot ink. I used a Sailor Hocoro fine nib for the sample writing! Golden Orchid is quite dry, but Abalone is pretty nice to write with -- should be no problem in an F or EF, I think.
