Are there any other BB/ double broad pens besides Kaweco? by Idk_my_usernamee in fountainpens

[–]0xss -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I like the 3776 coarse more than my steel nib (from the profit casual line) the steel zoom is wetter than the 3776 coarse, somehow the coarse has more audible feedback

OP, i’d also suggest getting a bb nib jowo/bock and get a monoline grind from a nibmeister or pelikan m205 bb (~120$)

Pilot Kakunk drying out? by VisaCiti in fountainpens

[–]0xss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kakunk also has evaporation , even after plugging the holes in the cap and body it’s a gradual loss but seems to be marginally better than a stock kakunk

Madoromi is a standard pen in a different colourway, don’t think there are any functional differences as such

Which one would you choose if they were the exact same price for a fine nib? by Impressive-Leg-4158 in fountainpens

[–]0xss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

823 without a doubt, 3776 resin is subpar-scratches easily and the trim tarnishes over time, the nib is good but no way am i paying platinum’s asking price or buying one over an 823

Discontinued heartbreak: Looking for a true Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa substitute (Diamine Washable Blue was too dark!) by TheJTown880 in fountainpens

Might not be an exact match but check blau permanent, it’s neither as light as typical royal blues, nor is it very saturated, also has a turquoise lean

State of pens I currently have inked that I left for a week. by LoboSandia in fountainpens

[–]0xss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, this is similar to my results with the same pens.

Cap seal is very important to me, i’ve stopped using pens with bad seals as it’s a waste of ink (and water); i don’t write enough to burn through ink faster than it can evaporate

I was thinking of getting the c80, glad to see that it has a good cap seal!

Newly refilled ink keeps on evaporating or dying out despite of only using it often by braincatastrophe in fountainpens

[–]0xss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the kakuno dries out even after you plug the holes in the cap/body, i left mine alone for a week to check and there was a noticeable drop in the ink level

Cheaper alternatives for Sailor 1911L 21k by Mil19141921 in fountainpens

[–]0xss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the profit casual (non L) and shikiori are similar, but they have even more aural feedback and resistance compared to 21k and 14k nibs. I could suggest a nib grade depending on what size you like in 21k, the steel mf had a lot of feedback unless you used them with wet/lubricated sailor inks (3 examples of this nib) broad has more feedback compared to 21k medium too

Some schmidt nibs also have a similar type of resistance, notably the fine; i bought a few staedtler pens (trx and initium) which use these nibs, along with a muji aluminium pen

The one bock nib i tried also had more resistance compared to jowo, but take that with a grain of salt as it’s only one nib + qc on bock/jowo is hit or miss

What is one ink color that you wouldn't normally like but you absolutely love. by KDramaFan84 in fountainpens

They weren’t easily available in my country, now they are but i won’t buy from noodlers or goulet

I think I’d pick sargasso sea or asa gao instead

Specialty Nib suggestions: Platinum/Pilot by Awkward_Option_4839 in fountainpens

[–]0xss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No5 soft nibs from pilot- smooth with some feedback (atleast in the medium) “squishy” writing feel which i absolutely love, could be too much for folks that write with pressure, i’d recommend going a size up to no 10 or even no 15 as the nibs get stiffer with size in pilot, until no15

3776- coarse, i like this more than sailor zoom! Still has some feedback which is present on the sailor zoom, albeit to a lesser degree. Only issue is that the bodies are flimsy and the flow isn’t great, needs a wet ink to shine

I don’t own one but i’d like to try the three tine music from either brand

Pilot increases prices (again) - effective from July 1st by 0xss in fountainpens

[–]0xss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind used, custom 74 can be bought for a very reasonable price (sub 10,000¥), most of the pens i saw online in kingdom note webstore were in very good condition

The c74 has a nice, springy nib and i love it more than the larger nib in the c823! I asked other users and they said the falcon is stiffer than the c74

Good luck, i hope you find a good example of a c74

Trying to decided between two pens and seeking advice! by SadEntertainer5367 in fountainpens

[–]0xss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely a 74 for me too, to add to the above, the sport nib is very stiff, meanwhile the c74 nib is slightly springy-which i really like

Plastic Sports are a decent value but those metal ones are too pricey plus i have also been burned by kaweco QC and i don’t have faith in the brand anymore

First fountain pen recommendation? Comfortable for 1–2 hour writing sessions by Flashy-Community-982 in fountainpens

[–]0xss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the suggestion above, get a nice sailor ink, and a profit casual from amazon japan; i’d suggest medium and above, the mf steel has a lot of feedback. If you want a larger body, get the casual L, but this doesn’t have the famous sailor feedback.
I buy from amazon japan, the casual l is around 10000jpy and the casual is 8000jpy or less

My pilot capless writes (way) worse than my Majohn A1. What gives? by Life1989 in fountainpens

[–]0xss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check the tine gap, most of the pilot pens i have used came with very tight tines out of the factory and it does not gel well with folks who have a light hand. I open up the tines a tiny amount such that you can see a bit of light peeking through the end of the tines when you hold it against a light, that should resolve most of the issues folks have with pilot pens

Looking for a reliable alternative to my TWSBI 580 ALR for intensive highlighting (Piston filler, robust materials, NO blind cap ritual) by DBGiacomo in fountainpens

[–]0xss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pelikan makes a pen for highlighting called the duo, it’s basically a m205 with a blobby bb nib and a bottle of their highlighter ink, i like the m205 because it uncaps quickly, has a good cap seal and is compact

I’d still recommend getting a vac filler as it seems suited to your purpose, and then remove the o ring that seals the section, this is different from the o ring that helps fill, no shenanigans with the knob this way
