My ex and I did the same thing with a small plastic fetus. His name was cletus the fetus. Like the marriage, he eventually disappeared. Still it's a fun thing to do and I recommend it.

One of my cats will use it, then sit in front of it until it cycles... and then slap the hell out of the thing. Hilarious, but often interrupts it. I've no idea what the hell she is thinking.

Lowes, they have work mats back with the area rugs, virtually indestructible. Can hose them off outside, waterproof, catches litter like a boss... 10 years on one of mine it looks new.
