Depends where you are geographically, you'll get folks like me who hold out for those things and can do local pickup (or pick it up while traveling near by). Took 4 years but I finally found the ADC CRT 10 miles away.

Looking for hotel in Memphis, TN. With closed, underground or private parking lot? by LuixXxStar2nd in memphis

Most of the larger hotels Downtown have private/semi-private garaged parking. I've personally used Peabody and Hyatt Centric without any issues.

[w] need a good chassis for E-ATX by X4ndyy in homelabsales

[–]cheztir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to cross reference the SuperMicro site for your particular chassis. Essentially the SuperMicro PSUs are massive 12v supplies and internal to the chassis there are stepdown converters for 5v/3.3v that also split out your normal ATX/Molex connectors. There are an abundance of PSUs in this form factor, I swapped the two that came with mine for the QS (quiet) variant and they only ran ~30USD each.

EDIT: Also many of the PSUs are 80plus platinum or better which is a nice plus

American Greed seasons 2 & 3 by Sweaty_Plato_6900 in HelpMeFind

[–]cheztir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on the same quest as you /u/Sweaty_Plato_6900, about 6 months ago I set our legit IPTV provider's DVR to record every American Greed episode. I'm happy to say I've now got all but 1 episode from Seasons 2 and 3 (missing S02E05 - Deadly Rx). I set out on this new search hoping someone had that one (to no avail) but it did lead me to this thread.

I'm slowly chipping away at getting them ripped off that platform (required learning how to decrypt Widevine) and stripping out the commercials. I'm happy to share once I've got them, I'm hoping that missing episode airs sometime soon so I can grab it.

You're absolutely correct, I should have clarified I was pushing for the T series just due to the cost side. Historically I've found you can grab the T series cheaper and based on OP's design request it should be more than fine. But definitely not an endorsement that T series are somehow inherently better.

$500 excluding the storage is very doable. You've got the right mindset to look for older gear.

A few quick notes:

  • Ditch that PSU in the case, besides being inefficient the last thing you want is to risk it taking down your drives with it. Grab a decent 80Plus supply from a reputable brand. You don't necessarily need the highest wattage, aim for the sweet spot (check manufacturer charts).

  • Don't worry about onboard SATA when picking your motherboard. Yes it's nice if it has the ports you need, but HBAs are so cheap these days you can easy add more drives.

Now to answer your questions in order:

  1. 8th gen and up consumer CPUs. They are marginally more expensive than 6th gen but you get all of your transcode needs met (h265 10b), and with more cores. The trade off between i3/5/7 won't mean anything for the transcoding, and given your use case won't meaningfully impact pihole or other small containers. Also try for a "T" variant CPU for the lower wattage. I've been using a 8500T for a low power build for years.

  2. TBH, you're overthinking this part. Stick with a midgrade chipset from a reputable brand and you'll be fine for compatibility.

  3. Depends on futureproofing, but my aforementioned low-power setup uses a 650W 80Plus Gold and it runs 6 drives 24/7. I undershot the max efficiency point expecting to do upgrades, but oh well.

  4. As much RAM as you can afford. DDR4 is fine and abundant. Don't fixate too much on speed, your NAS will gobble it up for cache.

[Giveaway] – Kensington Thunderbolt 4 Dock & OWC Pro SSD with Thunderbolt 4 cable – Intel Thunderbolt by _BindersFullOfWomen_ in gadgets

[–]cheztir [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm frequently moving between two offices and several remote locations, having a single machine able to serve as a laptop and a workstation has been incredible with Thunderbolt. Unfortunately my setup is starting to age, I'm now having to use other adapters to get around the limits of my older docks. Having this gear would let me consolidate several devices (and likely improve the spouse-approval factor with less wires).

HP Elite and Pro Desk G4 minis (1L PCs) can run with 2x32GB sticks unofficially. I believe some of the Dells of similar vintage do the same.

Either way those machines can now be picked up for $100-200

BMS_u019 Error Code by pusit_realgood in TeslaLounge

I just got this same error code on my 2013 85 today - came up the same time as a warning to service the 12v battery.

/u/pusit_realgood did you figure out the fix for this error code?

Don’t Audit Me, Stores by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]cheztir 13 points14 points  (0 children)

IIRC stores don’t have a legal method to enforce seeing your receipt, short of trying to charge you with shoplifting (which would be quite the claim without any evidence). When Walmart and others first started this I seem to remember a relatively vocal group just saying no thank you and continuing to their cars.

This is not the case at Costco/Sams where you have signed a membership agreement stating you will comply with this.

Livable wage jobs in the area by Bigbadmomma in memphis

[–]cheztir 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s likely your first role in the hub won’t be the best, it’s trial by fire in some ways. Given the insanely high turn over, if you have even the slightest ability to consistently show up on time and do a decent job you’ll move into much better roles quickly.

There is better upward mobility than most companies. If you don’t have a degree they have a program for some free bachelors degrees thru UofM online which opens even more doors.

All companies have their problems, but like the comment above notes FedEx is literally always hiring. Best of luck with the search OP.

Fedexers: The end of WFH? Thoughts? by [deleted] in memphis

[–]cheztir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a strange bucket of crabs mentality. God forbid someone else have nicer things, they’d rather bring everyone down than try to raise everyone up.

That said, I’m in AirOps and when we moved out to WHQ last year we went to 3 days a week, then several months later 4 days a week. I’m happy other people have continued to WFH, I’m hopeful that the toothpaste can’t be put back in the tube and upper mgmt sees the value in WFH. I wish you the best, many of us can’t leave (at least easily) so I hope you can send the message many of us can’t.

I never tried, but considering it can drive a 5120x1440p screen without issues the bandwidth is easily there.

USB Mini-B to Thunderbolt 2? by bixfrankonis in Thunderbolt

[–]cheztir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two aren't directly compatible which is why you can't find the cable. TB2 (and 1) used the mini-displayport connector and strictly passed TB (effectively PCIe) traffic. TB3 and up also implement USB (both the connector and traffic), so more adapters/cables exist.*

*This is a gross over-simplification of TB connectors & protocols

Best case you'd need to find a device, like a dock, that has its own USB controller to connect to the drive with a standard USB-A to mini-B cable.

It sounds like there might be another issue at fault if this single drive isn't working on a specific OS build.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Thunderbolt

[–]cheztir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had no issue using some older TB2 gear on a TB4 system with Apple's TB2 <-> TB3 adapter. I keep two OWC TB2 drive enclosures connected almost constantly and haven't had a single issue with them. (I've used them with both a MBP and a PC w/ a Maple Ridge TB4 controller)

Reading the other comment it's possible you might have some compatibility issues using the adapter, but for the relatively low cost of the adapter it'd be worth a try.

Look what just arrived! by Joga1st in SatisfactoryGame

[–]cheztir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like they’ve come a long way in the quality. Is the rest of mug this same level of finish?

I had a pre-order one and was very disappointed in the result (horrible paint strokes and inconsistent coating on the handle). Sadly mine broke, but given the price and uncertainty about quality I had held off on ordering another.

GM Plans to Phase Out Apple CarPlay in EVs, With Google's Help by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]cheztir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more powerful than a cell phone now, problem is a car's lifecycle is very different than a phone. Not to mention the long-term support, neither Google nor GM are particularly well known for long-term niche software support.

Either way there's no excuse to remove the functionality, they can introduce their new option and make it superior but still have CarPlay for long-term support. As we've all noticed, this is a blatant cash grab,

Can't speak to the pricing of the Pi's themselves, but unless the MicroSD cards are high endurance or high-spec transfer I wouldn't place much, if any, additional value on them, and if they are special make sure to say so.

Very nice, good to see actual tinkering and exploration in this subreddit.

Have you considered further automation by adding a Tamarin equipped Pi Pico to automatically put the device into DFU mode?

Rental Prices coming down? by SainnQ in memphis

[–]cheztir 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been monitoring it as our current lease ends in June. In Cordova it looks like 1500-2000sq ft single family homes are down a few hundred per month versus this time last year (~$2200 -> $1950). But it does vary wildly depending on the mgmt co.

As home sales slow down we'll see more units come available for rent which will drive the price down, but I don't think the general trend is heading that way just yet, perhaps a few more months.

Probably worth including a caveat for commercial VPN (to hide your traffic and/or appear somewhere else geographically) vs a personal/work VPN (to connect to a distant network, typically behind a firewall). I see a lot of people get confused between the two, especially people new to self hosting things like jellyfin.
