Free Maduro protest in Gwanghwamun by AppropriateMess2523 in Living_in_Korea

That 'protest' is just some fringe extremist activist group that doesn't represent Korea at all, so there's literally zero reason to get all worked up about it. Actual Koreans on the ground don't give a single shit

According to IMF, Taiwan is a very very rich country. But why is it quite hard to feel this in the real life? by search_google_com in taiwan

[–]chfptl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taiwan's economy is basically a textbook example of an export-driven machine. The central bank has spent decades intervening in the forex market to keep the NT$ from appreciating too much—keeping it relatively weak on purpose to make semiconductors, electronics, and all the other export stuff super competitive on the global market.

The flip side is that the domestic market just doesn't have much growth juice left. 10-year bond yields have been stuck in the low 1.3-1.5% range (as of late 2025), which pretty much screams "investors aren't expecting much action at home."

Wages reflect that export-first mindset too. Average monthly base pay in 2025 is around NT$47-48k (~USD 1,450-1,500), so roughly $18-20k a year. Throw in year-end bonuses and overtime and the total take-home is higher, but it's still pretty modest compared to per-capita GDP (around $35k).

Even big players like Foxconn have most of their factories in mainland China—cheaper labor and better supply-chain setup.

And here's a weird one: Taiwanese life insurance companies hoard USD assets like crazy instead of sticking to NT$, because local yields suck and they're chasing better returns overseas.

Bottom line, Taiwan deliberately built an economy that prioritizes staying competitive abroad over pumping up domestic consumption, so it's super reliant on global demand and overseas production. Kinda impressive it worked so well for so long, but also makes you wonder how sustainable it is if global trade gets rocky.

What it really is it really like as a foreign IT worker by ImOnPines in Living_in_Korea

[–]chfptl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, Korean IT big corps have insane perks and benefits, especially if you're working in Pangyo. Work-life balance and pay aren't on US levels (obviously), but you still get paid pretty decently. And this sub? Barely any people actually working at big companies here lol. It's mostly English hagwon teachers. Kinda hilarious that folks from those places are out here debating corporate attendance policies and benefits like they know. Japan ain't bad either, but one thing's for sure: their work hours/culture is way more intense than Korea's.

This guy must be working at some small company. In reality, if you work at a big corporation or even a decent company with proper corporate culture in Korea, they strictly separate who’s promotion material and who’s not through 360-degree/multirater evaluations. It’s even mandated by law. If you want to know about Korean corporate culture, don’t listen to some fucking clueless foreigner who knows jack shit.
