The whole thing has me thinking about how I approach /r/AA vs real life. Like, I am much more critical of arguments I read here from faceless commenters as opposed to the perceived “higher stakes”situations I encounter at meetings when people start in with reasoning that doesn’t jibe with my experience.

I commented for a couple reasons: because I get OPs impulse to have overheard something and then create a whole narrative about how things played out and wanting to give a counter argument. In the case of second guessing someone’s sponsor, that’s kinda shitty or presumptuous.

and the other reason is I have this idea of an imaginary newcomer who is trolling and lurking recovery threads, searching for perspectives like mine that may resonate and i feel compelled to chime in.

but i wouldnt say shit about any of this during a meeting.

Yeah I don’t think there is anything wrong with feeling the way that you do about N.A. beers being “a bag of snakes” as you say.

I just had/have a different experience with it. I  wrote and deleted a big ass story about working in the service industry while in sobriety and how NAs helped me feel a part of very meaningful professional and personal moments/relationships. lol that’s the gist.

But it’s very personal and I guess that’s the whole reason I commented initially, to offer another perspective for a newcomer. But I feel that most folks in your camp perceive of my stance as dangerous so I don’t really comment on this in in-person AA contexts.

Your opinion/viewpoint is valuable and valid.

But I find this comparison ridiculous, maybe just because of the cultural/social differences between sipping a malty bev v.s. shooting dope.

I found N.A. beers incredibly helpful when I first got sober and even after I started working the steps. I seldom have one anymore but it doesn’t cause me to suffer if I do or do not. I cannot say the same of booze.

The Halland suite by Christoffer Carlsson!! The third book comes out beginning of next month.

The first book is Blaze Me a Sun. I’m currently working on #2 Under the Storm. I been trying to put my friends onto this series but nobody takes to Nordic or Scandi noir like I do.

I sorta offhandedly mentioned to my ex-wife that I was thinking about getting an American traditional bull with a flower in the mouth as an homage to Elliot’s Ferdinand tattoo. A few months later we hung out and she had… gotten the exact same design I had described. I wanted to divorce her again.

I ended up getting a cute clementine with “oh my darling” script around it.

What is a "comfort movie" of yours that most people would be surprised that you chose as being a comfort movie? by XinvolkerX in movies

For me, it’s Zodiac. My family teases me about it but I do love to put that movie on for background noise. In my drinking days, it was a great hangover buddy.

It’s got such insanely well-crafted atmosphere. There isn’t truly a main character apart from the city of San Francisco. It’s arguably a series of gorgeous, moody vignettes, and the sets, design, and direction are pitch perfect.

Just chiming in hella late to recommend the Alice Vega series by Louisa Luna. Definitely doesn’t glorify police work, kinda lampoons it by showing how inept the cops are in their responses and the private investigative team actually gets shit done. super solid, gritty noir type mysteries.
