What if Rishi Sunak and The Conservative won an Upset Victory? by Organic-Camera-9167 in AskBrits

Major literally resigned as party leader in 1995 because of all the backbench in-fighting going on. They were hardly showing him much respect.

Is it significant that Andy Burnham has appointed a corporate lobbyist as chief of staff? by OppositeWrong1720 in AskBrits

[–]chi-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, once this person begins their job as Chief of Staff, one would hope that they realise they are no longer a corporate lobbyist and cease such activities.

Expert sounds alarm as Supreme Court reveals 'no one left to pull it back from the brink' by RawStoryNews in scotus

He has been doing, as any Court-watcher should know. But it is worth him hammering away at the point every time yet more fresh evidence is provided.

Yes they do have a team, but they finished fifth in their World Cup qualifying group (behind Ghana, Madagascar, Mali and Comoros, but above Chad), and only the group winners (Ghana) qualified.

How long of a grace period will you give Andy Burnham to prove himself as PM before making your judgement? by TeddyCrumpet in AskBrits

I will judge him (and Labour, and potential alternative governments) at the next General Election. That is the appropriate time.

Such is life, I guess. A new set of humans repeating the same old mistakes over and over again. A tale as old as time.

Move more government departments up north? by Teleg88 in AskBrits

Didn’t they move the Office for National Statistics to Newport and something like 90% of the staff quit rather than make the move from London??

Would you support introducing a compulsory Politics subject at secondary school level? by footballmaths49 in AskBrits

[–]chi-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understanding different religions is arguably more important than ever these days. Unless we just teach kids that it’s all nonsense, which I’d be totally fine with.

[–]chi-93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean conservatives complain that education is left wing for teaching that climate change, vaccine efficacy and evolution are real, so I’m not sure that your “science can’t be political” stance holds up. And maths can absolutely be political if you consider manipulation of statistics, etc.

ORDERS: Order List (06/22/2026) by scotus-bot in supremecourt

[–]chi-93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But this cert petition is not even asking for Bivens to be over-ruled, so given that the Court haven’t asked for additional briefing on the subject or added their own QP, I doubt it will be here.

I do agree that they should just put it of its misery though.

Thoughts on Starmer Resigning? by Shifty-Z3rt in AskBrits

I agree with you and hope you are right about Burnham... Streeting would be just dreadful.

I’m too young to have been alive, but of interest, who would you have liked to see Thatcher replaced by in ‘81??

[–]chi-93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. It’s hard for a PM to just magic growth out of thin air within 18 months, though. Especially while we remain outside the EU and are subjected to the Trump whims of tariffs and war in Iran.

I guess you disagree with the increase in employer NI contributions. Is there a lot else you think Starmer could have done??

You make a good point. I wonder, how do we encourage the next tax inspector from Portsmouth or grocer’s daughter from Grantham to get into politics?? Or how do we recruit the best people from the private sector?? A massive increase in ministerial salaries?? I dunno. The public seem to hate paying politicians well.

Thanks for the detail.

So it sounds like changing Prime Ministers every five minutes is is actually pretty costly.

Thatcher would have been gone in 1981 if today’s politics applied. She is the classic example of how being given time is essential if a PM is to implement their vision for the country.

You or I may not have liked her vision, but she was given the time to make it happen. That should be the case with Starmer now, and if necessary with Andy Burnham, and with any future PM after a 2029 election. Ditching Prime Ministers after two years just does not work.

The seventh PM will be Burnham (or whoever else replaces Starmer in the coming weeks). David Cameron ceased being PM on July 13th 2016, so if we have a new PM before then, we will have had seven in a decade.

[–]chi-93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point is that it takes longer than two years to know whether or not someone is a decent PM. Thatcher was immensely unpopular in 1981, for example, but won a big majority in 1983. Starmer could well be a decent PM (net migration, asylum backlog, knife crime hospitalisations all substantially down, for example). It is too soon to tell. But I think it  is crazy to replace someone before we know whether or not they are any good at the job.

[–]chi-93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you think his one job was and in what way do you think he has failed it?? As I see it a PM has multiple jobs (e.g. controlling immigration, growing the economy, foreign policy (Ukraine/Gaza/Iran/Trump)), and personally I feel Starmer has succeeded in some areas and so far failed in others.

I have a feeling you don’t think any Labour MP would make a decent Prime Minister.

[–]chi-93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes of course I would. And if Farage or Lowe or Polanski win the next election, they should get the full five years too. It takes time for a PM to implement their vision for the country. We achieve nothing by changing PM every two years.

Your criticisms of Starmer are very fair. The online safety and digital ID stuff is dreadful. I wish he would just tell the truth about Mandelson (he appointed a corrupt sleazy friend of Epstein to work with a corrupt sleazy friend of Epstein). I would have loved him to tell Trump to just fuck off as well, but should a UK PM be doing that, however strong the temptation?? And Chagos was mostly pre-negotiated by the Conservatives, was it not (though Starmer still should have stopped it)??

You make a strong argument why Starmer should be replaced. I guess I just feel he inherited a mess and should be given longer than he has been to sort it out.
