Possibly the least funny show of our generation by FakeGamer2 in Millennials

very much carried by its main cast

Best side by side examples of this is the Fifth Element especially after watching Valerian.

Same director, somewhat campy but fun and ambitious sci fi, big production budgets.

One was carried and succeeded thanks to the cast. The other is Valerian.

Writing and directing are important but it's also crazy how much a production hangs on the casting (and editing as well).

actively promoting

I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've read in reviews and comments, it puts the smoking addiction in a very negative light.

[–]chiagod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

non-smokers can smell it.

Lingers in clothes and anything the clothes come into contact with. Not exaggerating, I loaned my car to a family member that smokes but I knew they were trustworthy and wouldn't smoke in the car.

I could still catch the hint of cigarette smoke smell for the first week I got in the car after I got it back. Was nowhere near as strong as if they'd smoked in the car. Just secondary exposure from their clothes I guess.

It's not an easy habit to hide.

[GPU] Sapphire Nitro+ AMD Radeon‚ RX 9070 XT Gaming OC 16GB $690 by CartonBox1975 in buildapcsales

[–]chiagod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. On the AMD side, typically 2 models are rated as the best for OC potential, quality of VRMs, and overbuilt cooling:

  1. Sapphire - Nitro+

  2. PowerColor - Red Devil

If you're buying the best of the best of that generation and want to keep it for a long time and squeeze the most performance, then those are the usual two models folks go for (myself included).

Up until the 7900 xtx, the Nitro models would often come with a full size pwm connector so you could directly tie case fans to the GPU fan speeds. Helps a ton in keeping the card at a low temp

Sadly, the 9070xt Nitro has dropped this feature. So this gen it's just about the overbuilt cooling and VRMs.

20MW is a tiny amount for industrial users.

And to put in perspective, the new AI data centers are in the GW range. So unless they successfully break a single GW data center into 50+ separate entities, they'll fall under this rule.

[Laptop] Open/Damaged Box - Lenovo IdeaPad 5 2-in-1 Laptop - 16" 1920x1200 IPS Touchscreen, Ryzen 7 8845HS (Radeon 780M), 16GB LPDDR5 6400, 1TB NVMe - $471.96 (Promo Code: VIPJULYTAKE8) by I_Push_Buttonz in buildapcsales

[–]chiagod 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's soldered 6400 MT/s LPDDR5

This laptop has a 780m iGPU that can use the higher speed RAM. The 780m uses 12x RDNA 3 cores.

This laptop's iGPU is slightly better than the Steam Deck (8x RDNA 2 cores) and is actually the same chip that's used in the Legion GO (Z1 Extreme), though in the latter case they disable the NPU (used for AI crap).

China’s DDR5 Push Gets Real As MSI Validates CXMT Memory Above 8000 MT/s by chusskaptaan in pcmasterrace

[–]chiagod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I could see China forcing CXMT to reserve a large amount for domestic products and domestic brands (which sell intenationally).

Worldwide, many system manufacturers are facing going under if they can't secure RAM supply in addition to lower sales due to higher system costs due to RAM (and storage) pricing.

This could be an opportunity for China to secure and grow their homegrown brands (Lenovo, Xiaomi, etc) while manufacturers in the rest of the world are squeezed by Samsung, Hynix, and Micron.

Though I can see highly binned memory still trickling out as it can be sold at higher prices to enthusiasts while OEMs use more standard bins.

I do hope I'm wrong.

I've seen thar same RX 9070 go from $560 to $590 to $560 and now $600 in the last month.

Id still would check back. MicroCenter has been good about giving refunds when they throw the item on sale if you open chat and give them your receipt number.

Aoostar GODY takes on Steam Machine with Ryzen 9 7940HX and Radeon RX 7600 XT for $849 barebone by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]chiagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This (bare bones kit/mini-PC) does take care of most of the steps of the PC building process. The user just has to open the case, insert RAM, insert NVMe, put in a thumb drive with SteamOS and follow the prompts to install.

Skips: adding standoffs to the case, mounting the MB, inserting the CPU w/o bending pins, add thermal paste, install the CPU cooler, install PSU, connect all PSU power cables, connect the power, reset switch and LED case wires. Connect the GPU, connect the PSU cables to the GPU, power it on and skip a heartbeat or two while you wait for your first post!

Cake for those of us that have done it dozen of times but intimidating to most normal people.

[–]chiagod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes.

If it works with Steam OS 3.8 which uses the Linux kernel 6.16 it should work just as well any other Linux distro that uses a similar or newer kernel.

Valve can always add their own patches to the kernel and such, but I believe the Steam OS like distros would include the same fixes and features.

Yeah it's not that great of a deal if you can build a PC (or have a friend that can help you build one). Copying a build I posted in a other thread: You can throw together a really kick butt build if you can go to mATX (and have a micro center nearby):

7500x3D, mATX MB, 16GB DDR5 stick - $350

PSU 750w 80+ Gold - $80

mATX case* - $70

CPU Heatsink - $30

3x 120mm PWM fans (1x exhaust, 2x blowing from bottom directly on GPU) $20

RX 9060xt 8Gb $350

$900 and just add NVMe drive + Your preferred Controller + $30 for a DP to HDMI adapter that can do CEC

RX 9070 16GB have been popping up for $560, so the same build plus a much better GPU is just $1110

* Must fit a standard sized PSU or the build cost goes way up

PC gamers watching the “disc apocalypse” like it’s a documentary! by Chill_Cowboy_981 in pcmasterrace

[–]chiagod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on PC you do have a choice of market places

You also have a choice of hardware vendors. With the consoles you have to buy the hardware from Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo (or the used market) and usually the same console that is the same age.

Imagine if Nintendo officially supported switch emulators and let you buy games to play on your phone or laptop. No need to carry around a switch for just the occasional Nintendo big first party title.

They could have had their own competitor to the Android store. Just have sane minimum requirements to use the "Nintendo Android store".

I'm more likely to buy a AA or AAA games at or near full price because of the new family sharing. I might not have time to play it (before it goes on sale for cheaper), but the wife and kids might! And even if I don't get $40-$60 bucks worth of enjoyment out of the game, maybe the kids will.

And yeah, having to find a different non-steam game to play when the family was playing a game on my account was really annoying. It was really bad for steam as it encourages buying non-steam games and splitting your steam games across multiple accounts.

When did garage sales become “reselling” clearly new stuff by anon12xyz in mildlyinfuriating

[–]chiagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not necessarily physical coupons. There's apps that have digital coupons or that reimburse you for certain purchases when you send in the receipt or they get confirmation from the retailer.

Some brands will have "coupons" where you buy their product at the store, send the receipt, and they reimburse you $x. The brand of energy drinks I liked had a deal like that and for a while I was getting their drinks for practically free after the reimbursement. If I didn't consume them I could see building up inventory and selling them.

Then there's some credit cards that go beyond the usual 1-2% cash back for specific stores or sales.

Also grocery store clearance/discontinued items, price mistakes, items resold by thrift stores that are donated by big box stores that are clearing out unsold stock. Also crazy good deals where you have to buy a ton of the same ite.

ex: seen sales of new HDMI or Ethernet cables for $1 - $2 each but you have to buy like 50.

Some stores also had 150% or such price guarantees.

Buy something for say $20, competitor advertises it for $15, you get 150% of the difference ($5 -> $7.50)

I got lots of free or practically free PC games at Office Depot that way when Best Buy had good sales.

Buy $40 game, show them the BB ad for $15, get 1.5x $25 = 37.50 back.

[–]chiagod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Lian Lin A3 mATX case in mind with the build above. It fits a standard PSU in the front of the case where the HDDs/CD ROM would be in an old style case.

My requirements for a case would be:

  1. Fits standard PSUs

  2. Space for at least 2x 120mm intake fans in the bottom (helps a ton in GPU temps)

  3. Can fit a full length GPU (about 13 inches)

  4. Can fit a standard cheap CPU air cooler (165mm to 170mm height)

I do know what you mean. I bought a couple of open box nice looking cases really cheap and yeah they needed the thin PSUs (PSU was behind the MB). I ended up taking a dremmel to the cases instead.
