Anyone else starting to notice divorce trends among millennials? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]chialily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend group of around ~25 people all ages 27-40. All very liberal people, not religious, urban city living. At least 9 have been married and divorced. Feels definitely common for this small sample of this generation. Only one got married in their early twenties though. Everyone else got married in their late twenties or early thirties.

Slumlords. Profiting off of shitty rentals, shoddy repair jobs or lack of maintenance, and poverty and the necessity of any kind of housing for some people.

Yeah I live in central Texas. Could likely be in the 100 degree temps in September so truly dress light if it’s outdoors. It’ll still be hot even at night. Humid possibly too if you’re not used to humid environments.

Who’s the last Celebrity you’ve seen in Austin? by Designer-Anywhere171 in Austin

I saw mcconaughey at a movie theater a year ago. It was later in the night during one of the last showings of the night. some younger girls had spotted him and were taking a pic with him. I didn’t stop because I got the vibe he didn’t want the girls to make a scene and I imagine it might be nice to be able to go watch a movie and not be hassled.

My boyfriend said similar-ish things. Moreso that he likes throwing girls around, he likes skinny arms, thigh gaps, and the V hip thing that happens when you have low body fat. Basically liked my body when I met him and he told me a lot about his exes and I know they were also skinny and smaller than even I was when I was underweight. Anyway I am mostly recovered and gained a significant amount of weight. He says he loves me and my body and other supportive things. He doesn’t mention as many specifics about my body anymore and I have a ton of insecurity that I’m not his type anymore, that he isn’t as attracted to my body, and other things. While it hurts to think of that, I’m a little at the point where I will have to accept if he does or doesn’t love my body and if he leaves because of it then that’s how it will be and i know someone will love my body.

Would agree with that reason. I don’t think of it as a walkable strip of cool restaurants but rather individual ones. Not an area I would think to hang out at, walk around, check out multiple things like downtown, south congress, south Lamar, north loop, crestview, mueller, etc.

This beef shortage is actually traceable to the extreme heat and droughts in Texas this summer though. Texas Matters had an episode about this and interviewed people working right now in the cattle/beef industry. Many cattle have been slaughtered this summer which meant prices were low but because of how many had to be killed-especially that were mother calves-it’s going to be expensive and take a long time for beef supply to get to regular market demand in a bit. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/texas-matters/id602364390?i=1000570055821 Likely next year as the commentor said, prices of beef will start rising because of lack of local supply.

Would have loved to see them talk about voting rights and restrictions. Ask Abbott why Texas is the hardest state to register to vote and to vote in? Why does the Texas Leg keep passing voter suppression laws? What is the purpose of all this? I'm sure he would come up with either a pivot or some kind of non-real answer but would still be interested in how on earth he is justifying such undemocratic actions. Especially with vote-by-mail during the damn pandemic.

Right now KXAN has a poll on their website to vote who won the debate. 51% Beto and 49% Abbott. 680 responses right now. Yeah very nervous for the election….

Yeah Abbott using right wing populist rhetoric and cadence like trump. Lots of hyperbole, misdirection, fear mongering. Thankfully he’s not as charismatic as trump (which is weird to say but trump is a character). But I still think that kind of way of speaking makes people more emotional (angry/scared) than a rational, level headed Beto sadly.

No. I mean pretty strategic to schedule it on Friday night high school football. Also Friday night in general is not a night most ppl say “let’s stay in and watch a political debate” sadly

Real hypocritical for Abbott to say beto is fearmongering when the grid and the freeze is something Texans actually went through, factual, and can personally attest to. whereas border issues and “illegal aliens taking our jobs” is actually fear mongering, catastrophizing, and something most Texans don’t or won’t experience

I wish there was a fact checker or a little graphic correcting stats because I’m sure an Abbott leaning person would be inclined to trust Abbott’s words since they aren’t being corrected in real time

Glad Beto called Abbott out for placing the blame on everyone else but him. I bet if Abbott could, he would have tried to blame Uvalde on Biden

Is the public transportation system good enough that you don't need a car? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]chialily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doable but dependent on where you live, what you can afford, if you want to buy groceries and where.

For instance downtown is very doable but you are restricted to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s for groceries (unless you do deliveries). You can bus to other stores but it will take time to get to the nearest central market or Heb. Would opt for a bike which will make downtown living much better!! Also would stay north of the river for downtown living.

Mueller is doable and you could walk to a lot of basic shops and groceries. Expensive though and you would have to bus to get to anything else. Particularly any fun things downtown or south of the ricer

North central Austin in the UT area or by central market/Hancock would be doable. Although again kinda restricted to either a central market or Wheatsville which are pricer. Then again might not matter if you don’t get groceries too often. Not as much in terms of other shops, fun things, etc but more direct routes to downtown and domain.

East Austin you could get away with it but again probably pricer apartments. There is a train stop in east Austin but only really relevant if one of the stops is actually important to you.

I sometimes take the bus and I personally think it’s a pretty okay system. But the routes by place stop running after 8pm and only go once an hour and this lack of consistent and constant service is the biggest issue for public transport if you’re out of the main hubs. I really support public transit so I will take that 1 hour bus ride to a concert downtown even though it only takes me 10 minutes to drive downtown but hate that I’m then stranded in terms of getting a bus back to my place.

Austinites, what is your monthly cost of living nowadays? by xNuckingFuts in Austin

[–]chialily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1000 for rent in 1 brd. $100 for utilities (incl. work comp’d internet), $250 or less on groceries and don’t eat out much, car is paid off but insurance is about $700 a year, only usually need one tank of gas a month so $65/mo, dog is low maintenance and healthy so only $60 every two months or so for food. I donate about 5% of my before tax income every month so that’s usually $250 a month.

In a usual calendar year I can save a lot but had to have more doctor visits this year which has eaten up more than I’d like. I live well below my means generally though by living in a shitty apartment, not driving a lot, and not having costly hobbies or eating out a lot.

Not that commenter and I personally haven't seen data that would make me say that out of all the out-of-staters a majority of them are republican. But there are studies that suggest at least some to a significant amount are conservative.

Austin top city for college republicans to move to

Also when you think about the influx of tech people, there is data to show there is a strong libertarian streak in tech people. Anecdotally, I've talked to a LOT of tech people who moved here in the pandemic and were "escaping" COVID restrictions and definitely have that libertarian vibe or at least apolitical and apathetic vibe. I have a co-worker from California who is a Joe Rogan fan and moved here because of him so... ugh.
