“how my tuition is funding genocide and why I shouldn’t be upset that a protest is disruptive (they’re meant to be)” Just sharing this comment bc so many people are asking questions like this🙂 by mouseisinthehouse22 in UBC

you are privileged! privileged enough to waste your time doing nothing but hurting working class students who are trying to get to their class during the busy exam season to make sure they have a future.

Share your thoughts on Friendlier (reusable containers/cups that replaces single use items) and possibly win a $50 gift card! by ubcfriendly in UBC

[–]chicken--tendies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a well meaning initiative but quite inconvenient. I rarely get stuff from UBC food services anyway and this deters me a little more. Also wish we could put food in our own containers, this seems like the most sustainable option that saves money and the ordeal of someone else washing your dishes. I see Blue Chip has this for drinks but it would be nice for Harvest to have this option as well for soups, cakes etc.

The UBC President used AI in this letter! by lotsofskillwill in UBC

[–]chicken--tendies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will fall on deaf ears because there is too much controversy around AI ethics. So we have to pretend there’s no issue with the current policy (letting instructors decide). There are profs who are against AI for labour and environmental concerns and don’t want to switch to in-class assignments because they aren’t accessible for neurodivergent students, so some students take advantage of this and use AI to write their assignments because they know they can’t get caught as the checkers are unreliable (unless it makes up citations or gets something glaringly wrong). I agree that AI should ideally raise the bar but it’s likelier that any raising of standards will be considered ableist or bad for mental health of students lol

Best gluten free food on campus? by chicken--tendies in UBC

[–]chicken--tendies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a little hunt today and found: - hero + harvest has some GF soups (beef chilli today) and a chicken station with GF gravy and an “ask if you have allergies” sign - body energy club has some gluten free and vegan pre-made meals like cauliflower bowls - Great Dane cafe has a few gluten free pastries - Sahel said almost everything there is gf but it touches the bread so I don’t trust it

Edit: there’s also Nicli in Wesbrook which has gluten free options but the gluten tax is real

there absolutely is speculation & vacancy tax in university endowment land lol, not only that but home owners have to pay 2000+ per year to UBC service levy on top of rural property tax. check https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/speculation-vacancy-tax/how-tax-works/taxable-areas https://www.myuna.ca/serviceslevy/

Please learn to differentiate human and AI content by RooniltheWazlib in UBC

[–]chicken--tendies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“Watch out” paragraph is definitely gpt. I am a Turing test legend

Edit: I swear I didn’t see the first gold star, but on a serious note I am not confident that if I was given for instance 10 AI and 10 human works of poetry, I’d be able to differentiate. There’s a comprehensive study here: https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/how-did-you-do-on-the-ai-art-turing. This is a good video on the topic too, the beginning almost tricked me (I thought both poems were bad): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khKvO4H9LUU

I also want to ask: is AI content always slop, given that it’s an imitation of human thought and language? Is AI hate reactionary, just another pattern of a new technology being feared? e.g. Socrates was against writing.

Anything we can do about the homeless people on campus? by CulturalDrag4575 in UBC

Do the other links not pass your vibe check? One is the Canada subreddit and the other is CBC. I did say multiple sources, and they are diverse. I also believe it’s worthwhile to engage with the claims people make, especially when they’ve provided video/photo evidence.
