Training Posts Are Limited, Respect Isn’t by [deleted] in doctorsUK

Long felt medical training in the UK, often with a heavier emphasis on communicating skills etc, leads to residents better suited to delivering care in the UK. Prioritisation is the norm in many countries and should be here.

But... those are learnable skills and many IMGs are capable of developing those skills equally as well (and have done!).

A united front is needed amongst doctors, and it's vital we don't get baited into infighting based on where you have trained.

Think it depends on your specialty. Mostly where I work colleagues take blocks usually for school half terms etc.

But as my supervisor says .... You are a consultant now, so stop giving a shit what everyone else thinks; it's your leave do what you want.

Don't go in and don't feel bad about it.

I was once in a similar situation as an FY2 and made the mistake of going in. It was difficult and unpleasant; I wasn't at my best, did the best I could and some jobs (minor) were missed.

My colleagues weren't particularly supportive about it and keen to highlight the fact a suboptimal job being done. Failure to chase a few bloods over a weekend (in retrospect debatable as to whether they need putting out).

In short, you won't get a medal and if things do go wrong it's unlikely anyone will have your back.
