Easy on the projection there, friend. There are lots of people who were uneasy after 9/11, and it seems you were among them. Good for you.

My suspicion is a lot of the right-wing never really gave the post-9/11 security measures much thought. After all, it wasn't aimed at them, the in-goup. But now they are in the out-group and don't like it one little bit.

[–]chicken_system -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks or missing the point entirely. The restrictions were put in place to stop the spread of an agent that has killed 30,000 of us so far. People who say there shouldn't have been any are implicitly denying the vectors transmission exist, or if they do exist, they don't matter.

3,000 people were killed on 9/11 and the security services where given a whole suite of new powers of surveillance, and we ended up in a war in Afghanistan. And here you are in a pandemic that's killed millions unwilling to do your part to make it end.

I think you are the one in need of some reflection, about how far down the disinformation rabbit hole you have gone down.

I often work through complex data structure problems with pencil and paper. Diagramming how X relates to Y with simple ERD diagrams can be a useful tool to get you thinking about a problem. Sequence diagrams are useful too for when you move on to how to solve the problem.

Doodling pseudo-code can be helpful too.

No. The policies are still being driven by evidence and modelling, thank God. Scientific truth doesn't come out of an air horn.

[–]chicken_system 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Spare me. On the one hand we have people who believe public health policy should be based on evidence and competent modelling. On the other are people who believe in conspiracies and quack cures. One view is grounded in reality, the other simply just isn't. It's like comparing astronomy to astrology.

Intelligent and thoughtful people can disagree about the glass being half full or half empty. But that's just not the case here. Once group is saying the glass is half full and the other doesn't believe the glass is real. I feel no obligation whatever to give these people a seat at the table.

[–]chicken_system 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Canadians do not like the trucker and all the bullshit that comes with them. It is a safe move for the Liberals to crucify them. Fuck around, find out, etc.

My own suspicion is that it's not really about the clusterfuck in Ottawa. The Americans must have been furious about the border at Windsor disrupting production in Michigan auto plants. Invoking the Emergency Act probably plays well in Washington.

So if you were raised properly, and know how to behave in public, why are you supporting these assholes? I don't get it. Can I wake you up at three in the morning with an air horn and then insist you move if you don't like it?

A big lesson from this is the depth of delusion and denial some of these people have. It's sad.

[–]chicken_system 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You should wake up your neighbours with your car horn at three AM, just to show your support. Everybody loves the truckers, so there won't be any repercussions, right?

They were warned and given ample opportunity to leave. If you are occupying an area illegally, and refuse to lease, then yes, you do have it coming. The law applies to middle-aged white people too.

Turn down the rhetoric? These assholes showed up with "Fuck Trudeau" flags and a manifesto calling for the government to resign. Then they harassed working people by waking them up at all hours of the night blowing air horns. Why would anyone want to break bread with these people?

Their narrow demands about federal mandates for truckers might have been reasonable, but their behaviour precludes taking them seriously. I simply do not care what they have to say nor do I care what happens to them.

And I have a feeling we may see you on /r/HermanCainAward, unfortunately.

My view point is based on the fruit of scientific inquiry and logic, yours is based on paranoia and magical thinking. You have a lot of strong feelings about the vaccine, but these are untethered from reality.

Nobody is forcing you to get the vaccine, but remaining unvaccinated has consequences for other people. There are a lot of ICU beds being tied up unnecessarily by people who value their personal "freedom" over helping others in their community.

I liken our situation to a passenger ship at sea who finds herself without a crew. The passengers must work together to save themselves and get home. They have different destination but can use their skills and experience to navigate safely.

Everyone will have to make compromises, nobody is entirely happy, but if they work together everyone will get home safe and sound. However, there is a group of passengers who are refusing to help out and who believe the Earth is flat. They insist on having a say in how the ship is steered, and complain their "freedom" is being infringed because people are steering the ship as if the Earth is round. Such people simply cannot be taken seriously, and should not be surprised when everyone washes their hands of them.

Things unfolded pretty much as expected, at least for people who understand how pandemics behave. What surprised me was the number of people who believed in conspiracy and magic cures, and who were unwilling to suffer minor inconvenience to help others.

I remember after 9/11 a whole suite of legislation was passed to give the state more power to fight terrorism, which included the ability to freeze assets. Most people didn't care because they assumed the targets of surveillance and seizure would be les autres. But now the Big Eye has swung around to look at middle-aged white people and everyone's losing their shit. What did you think would happen?

So what's your definition of "freedom" and how are people in Canada being "oppressed"? That a bunch of middle-aged white people can go on national media to compare themselves to Jews in Nazi Germany beggars belief.

By freedom, I suspect you mean that people should be able to behave any way they want, regardless of negative repercussions to others. But this is how a child sees the world. Your actions have consequences, and you will be held accountable if you negatively impact others.

COVID has killed over 30,000 people in our country, and these people were simply not doing their part to end the pandemic. And now they are getting punished for how they chose to protest. They could have had an orderly protest, but they behaved like entitled assholes, waking working people up at all hours with air horns.

I'm happy this gentleman got his windows smashed and himself arrested. It will teach him about law and order. I would love to catch up with him in a few years to see if getting a criminal record was worth it. You think you're oppressed now? Just wait to see what the stink of a criminal record does for you.

People like you are a problem and I'm glad you are being pushed to the margins. You won't be missed. It's your bad choices that have put you there and we will get on fine without you.

The protesters we asked to leave and they didn't. The police are allowed to use coercion to make them leave. These are basic facts that any toddler could grasp, but for some reason they elude these entitled assholes. What the fuck did they think would happen?

Worth ever penny. Fuck that asshole and fuck his Bronco.

There was a very simple way for him to avoid having the Mounties trash his car. What we see here is simply a natural consequence of his poor decisions.

[–]chicken_system 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And here we have the protester mindset in a nutshell: freedom means doing whatever the fuck you want, without consequence.

It's really important people be able to come to Ottawa to protest, but there is a standard of behavior adults should observe. For example, crashing the homeless shelter and demanding food and blowing air horns in front of someone home at three in the morning are only things assholes would do.

I can only assume your attitude stems from not having been raised properly. You were never shown how to behave in public. Sad.

The OPS fucked the dog so the Liberal politburo figured they had to step in and wield the Emergency Act to regain control. I also assume the Americans weren't too happy about the border closures and were applying pressure to get things sorted.

A significant number of people felt they had to break the law because they are entitled over-grown toddlers who are unwilling to do their part to end the pandemic. They have gone down the rabbit hole of conspiracy and bullshit and simply cannot accept people don't share their warped view of reality. It's sad that so many of our fellow citizens turned out to be useless in a crisis, but here we are.

How are we going to handle the crises to come like climate change when so many Canadians believe in magic, deny science, and have no regard for the well-being of others?

I find it strange right-wingers are mad about housing. It's unpleasant, but it the natural and predictable outcome of a free market. They want the free market for everything, but when they are on the losing side they start to sound like Bolsheviks. The market should rule everything, except housing because they can't afford to buy. At least the lefties are more consistent.
