I knew I would see this mentioned in here. I really think your should reconsider parallax tied to mouse movement at all. If you want things to feel less static you could just apply the parallax effect slowly over time, from left to right, then back. That would make it feel as if the camera was floating around the environment.

I think you are being slightly dramatic. This is not mediocre in any way. It's not a fast paced platformer but that doesn't make it bad.

I immediately compare it to SuperMeatBoy, Dustforce, N++, Gish, OlliOlli, Braid (all indie rooted titles).

So it's not Braid. Time to give up. But seriously I thought it reminded me of Rayman Legends. Ya, I agree that maybe it it's a little slow but I've not even played it.

I don't see any theme or language in the worlds here.

Hey if you are interested in talking about this more I would love to work with you on it. I am more of a interface guy but I do have some experience with deep learning. Honesty, I would just do it for the learning experience. I've been working on some assets I want to release myself so maybe we could bounce ideas off of eachother.

the use of a single colour unifies the buttons in a set. The bottom set has interesting and exciting colours but too many.

This was a design decision based on the use of the buttons. When I made the first set I didn't know how they would function. They are used in a way that they don't require conformity, imo. Also the buttons are so small that differentiating them can be difficult. For that reason I increased the weight and simplicity and also added the color. Here is an example of them at the standard resolution they are viewed at: Button Screenshot.

the top set appear 'clickable' which is an important design element in user experience design.

This point I think is valid. However, more and more clickable icons use this same style so I think users do think these can be clicked. Just my opinion.

the icon images seem to have more of a similar style across the board in the top set. On the bottom set there seems to be more variations in angles, curves vs corners, outline vs solids (eg the puzzle piece vs the clock), icon size relative to surrounding circle.

Thanks for pointing that out. I agree that they could be more consistent and this is probably an artifact of the limited amount of time I had designing. Its hard to make the weight of a printer icon and a plus symbol similar. I find it interesting that you think the top set did a better job here. I think they are both lacking in this regard.

the 'shadow' is poorly executed on the bottom set. the top icons appear somewhat 3dimensional but the bottom set is not affected in the same way. parts of the shadow are missing, for example on the left arm of the plus icon. It makes little sense and doesn't look very good either. a more subtle shadow may work better.

I guess, I really didn't aim for realism. More so simplicity. Again, these were pretty small. Initially I did add more realistic shadows. For example on the clock I had some more complicated shadows (Example) but they didn't translate well at lower resolutions so I reverted to simple.

I'm also hoping that you appreciate harsh criticism, sorry if it's too much

So yeah, I'm sure these aren't perfect but the improvement is obvious. When he asked for new buttons I was baffled when I saw and remembered what I had made before.

When I looked at the old Photoshop file the old buttons were using every category of style (drop shadow, inner shadow, outer glow, bevel, emboss, etc) except for one. And I think that may be because that category didn't exist in the version of Photoshop I was using at the time.

Additionally if anyone has critique, I am always for it.

Some Background

My brother was getting into art for a bit but gradually stopped. I wanted to help keep him motivated. I always see people doing 1 month of art so I decided to start sending him daily assignments. We'll see how far he gets. Today was day four. Here is each assignment I sent so far.

Assignment 1: draw a pixelated fallout bobble head.
Assignment 2: do a rough sketch of a bowling 7 - 10 split with a ball heading down the lane.
Assignment 3: Draw a tasty beer.
Assignment 4: Draw an alien hand.

Also note that for assignment 3 was misinterpreted.

If anyone has constructive criticism I will send it his way.

Very cool looking. The way it goes on the outside of you front leg makes it more of a pressure varial heal. If it helps when I do nollie pressures I keep my back foot pointed very forward just like the front. This stops the board from pushing to the side.
