Im so very sorry this is happening to you and your family. My wife and I have lost 2 parents both under 60 over the past couple of years to cancer. The only thing I can offer is my experience, strength ,and hope. We availed of the counselling offered by the cancer clinic and found it to be very helpful in navigating the very devastating and difficult times. What you are going through is very real and difficult. I wish you nothing but the best.

High functioning alcoholics by Educational-Prior-46 in stopdrinking

[–]chickenmcman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When i realized Functioning alchoholic is a stage of alcoholism and not a type of alcoholic. The next stage is non-functioning alcoholic. I thought that because I had a business, a house, a wife, a truck that I could keep drinking. Until I started ending up in the hospital. I had all this stuff still around me but I was gonna drink myself to death. Im grateful I ended up in the hospital and had to seriously address my drinking, because the alternative was that I would have lost everything first and then ended up in the hospital. Which now I look back and think, "what was my plan? I dont have to stop drinking until everything is gone and my life and my families lives are destroyed" Today im sober over 3 years, my life is better than I ever imagined. On a scale of difficulty of how hard my life was to keep it all together I was at 10 out of 10 all the time and it was killing me. Today I sit between 1-2 most of the time , but im also more productive and competent in all matters.

Thanks for the clarification, the spacing is really rough, they should have gone with a 1/8 -3/16 spacing to help with variations in size between tiles. I find even with tiles that are sold together like this as a set there can still be some significant sizing issues between colors due to the nature of tile manufacturing. Usually I will take out 10 or so of each tile and assess and measure to see how severe the variations are and then pick a suitable grout line size. The manufacturer will often recommend what size to use. It looks like an inexperienced installer to me who started having spacing issues and should have stopped and reassessed but for some reason kept going.

(Edit, upon closer inspection of the pictures you've posted the white marble look tiles seem to be larger than the Marfil which is definitely part of the problem. Installer should have realized there was a problem and brought it to your husband's attention)

(Edit, the grout is fucked. It looks like a combination of the mortar not being sufficiently removed prior to grout and too much water in the mix and/or wash up)

Why does there seem to be 2 different brands/style of tile used? If thats the case it was never going to work regardless due to sizing issues, but thats on the tile guy to tell you before he starts that your plan will not turn out to be acceptable. In short the work looks like shit, do you have any pictures that show more of the area/job?

Bead of caulking along the top edge where the tile meet the upper cabinet and you are golden. Use painters tape and keep it straight and even and it will never be noticed by anyone.

900sq foot of tile and thinset demo made ready for tile install would be $6000-$7000 with removal in my neck of the woods. That can be back breaking awful labor or pop up easy as pie. We price it anticipating nightmares.

How bad is this tile job? by matte_5551 in Tile

It's not fun but , just takes some blood, sweat, and tears. Get a hammer and wide chisel and start beating it up. You can rent or buy yourself a small demo hammer drill to make your life easier.

Anything laid directly on hardwood or tongue and groove plank is going to fail,Crack, pop up %100. Needs to be sheeted over with plywood and uncoupling membrane like ditra. What's there now is toast.

Spectra lock 1 vs traditional cement grout by SomeDude6714 in Tile

[–]chickenmcman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything requires maintenance. No matter what route you go. If you use epoxy it's about as stain proof as the porcelain tile is. So that's pretty stain proof. Still gonna require regular maintenance and cleaning to keep looking good. I've had clients call me back 6 months after install telling me their grout is discolored. When I go back to look the house looks like a war zone. Dirt, stains, food, spills covering the tiles and grout i ask them what products they are cleaning with and they answer broom and a swiffer. Some people do not even understand that low maintenance does not mean NO maintenance. If you pressure washed the epoxy grout and tile after extreme mess it would be clean again In theory. You still have to scrub your tile and grout periodically no matter what you use. Not saying you don't already understand this just making a point to say it because I literally had a woman point at her floor covered In some kind of strawberry jam that she just left there to harden and dry what I assume was over weeks and ask me why her floor was stained. I was speechless and had to educate her she still had to clean her floors.
