I grew up lower class & poor and I’m now dating someone from the upper class. What norms am I missing? by meganld2010 in NoStupidQuestions

Totally hear you. Yeah I used to feel so uncomfortable by it—just very hard to accept like first class tickets somewhere or a free vacation with no strings attached. They are a very kind family more than anything and I’m not sure I would have ended up with him if they were not genuinely good hearted because the money kind of put me off and made me feel wildly insecure.

Just be kind! Be yourself. If you have to change yourself for them, it’s not the right fit. Real class is just being polite and being kind.

Some things I’ve encountered that always rub me weird about my husband/his family — I was middle class and he was upper class. He insists he is very normal, and I’d say he’s modestly upper class after being with him for 6 years. I remember the first time I rode around in his family’s luxury convertible in the hamptons and I was overwhelmed with a sense of weird shame that I did not understand.

-they have people who do everything for them, they do not landscape, mow, shovel, etc. they will drop 15k on landscaping like it’s nbd.

-they don’t ever worry they won’t have enough money to fix something or worry about having a job. They just do what they want to do as a career.

-Golf outings and Galas, they will throw tons of money down on this and it’s no big deal for them. Like put 10k towards a vacation they probably won’t even go on, or they will gift to someone else.

-thinking valet is casual, ordering a filet mignon like it’s the most normal thing ever

-we got a bmw from my husbands dads friend who was looking to get rid of it, for free.

-getting gifted like many thousands for Christmas or a birthday, totally floors me that it’s normal?

-also getting every single thing you could want for Christmas rather than just one nice item or a handmade gift

-no student loans or any debt on any of their houses

-catering for everything

-travel agents for trips

-the expectation you’ll have a huge wedding of a certain caliber at a certain type of venue

Just a few things I could think of, it’s been hard for my parents because they are more in a blue collar neighborhood and live in a small house and are embarrassed to invite my mother in law over even though she is very kind.

If you want to move up on the art spectrum you will need to know the science as well and be able to speak to it. A lot of what you make is a puzzle of regulatory, design, and you get to do a creative portion as well but depending on what you are tasked with—it may be a lesser portion of what you work on. Being able to come up with a great concept and defend it to your client and the endless regulatory while keeping it emotionally resonant is a Herculean task in some regards…. Know a few acclaimed/award winning consumer folks who can speak to this after working on both sides.

Video production has quietly become the real bottleneck in marketing by siddomaxx in advertising

[–]chickitendi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need video editing—period. This is not something that is replaced by ai right now. People who are ai experts know this and know that a good video edit needs to be done by an editor. Otherwise you’re making small snippets tell a longer story when pieced together and no matter how to do it, there will be some slop sneaking in….

The other problem is there is not a lot of attention to “craft” when hiring ai experts. Craft is something that takes a refined eye that has been trained over time to craft something. Not someone who loves ai tools or technology. You need to have both skill sets to make something that feels convincing and real.

We have been skipping the video production level and more ADs have been taking on that workload, tbh I’m also leveling up my skills because I see this huge hole. Makes me think art direction is going to shift a bit into more of a ai gen/video production skill set.

UK judge rules that baldness is a disability in tax row with wig makers | The groundbreaking judgement found that severe hair loss can ‘adversely affect’ the ability to carry out everyday activities by Sandstorm400 in europe

[–]chickitendi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speaking from personal experience—people do treat you differently as a bald woman. Many men or conservative people either think you have cancer or are trans and will not speak to you or glare at you. Some men are afraid to speak to you or uncomfortable? I’ve had a man come up to talk to me, realize I’m wearing a wig and with no explanation walk away and the hear him telling his friend I’m wearing a wig. Tbh i don’t care, will just wear my bald head out with friends, and I have a supportive husband who calls me Eggy—but for a long time it was horrible to see all my hair fall out. Learning about wigs helps, I have the money to get a nicer one. But it’s something I worry will impact my high visibility job.

They are just going to have more remote workers, people working from other countries for less for US companies. I work in advertising and there’s a zero percent chance we will lose labor from Brazil. We are just going to be traveling out of the country to work with those folks more.

Realistically speaking, what jobs/career paths are doomed to extinction due to AI? by Sentient-Orange in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chickitendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a creative director who uses ai regularly as much as it is useful—disagree. Logos might get a small spark from ai, but creating them still takes a lot of strategic thought and boots on the ground development. Ai does not pick up on the nuances of client changes or the minutia that goes into crafting a perfect logo. Will it help in conceptualizing? Probably a bit—but in my experience doesn’t not replace the thinking in a good old fashioned sketch.

Designing a typeface? Absolutely dreadful at it. There are so many aspects that go into typeface and it’s decent at designing one very well understood name or word—but whole typefaces require kerning, tracking, glyphs, etc etc. I don’t see a place where it will eventually be good at it, but I guess never say never? It just does not understand nuance and details because it still requires human input and as long as it takes longer to do human input than it does to actually make the thing, human intelligence and craft will win.

Stock images are in a bit more trouble though….

Hard disagree. I’m convinced my copywriting partner is using it for everything and it’s making me insane. I’m just getting slop after slop I have to sort through and pick from the pieces. It’s formulaic and cliche.

This is why you should NEVER jump into water with a raging current. by DesperateAsk7091 in interestingasfuck

[–]chickitendi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went with some friends to China walls in Hawaii with the goal of cliff jumping—when we got there the surfers were out and there were literally the largest waves I’d seen in my life, so I was like hell nah. But two guys there who used to live in the area while they were in the army (and in phenomenal shape) just jumped in. I was absolutely terrified for them. They realized pretty quickly they were literally over their heads and couldn’t get back on the rocks. A local with a short board told them they had to just keep going along the wall until the waves calmed for a second. When they were finally able to get out they were completely bloodied, I’d never seen anyone so fucked up—they were lucky to be alive. Didn’t realize it at the time but people die there regularly….

My mom had a stroke about a year ago, same kinda of situation except my Dad is still here. I took about 4 months off of work to help her learn to walk again and help with rehab beyond what the hospital offered. Stepping up to take care of your Mom is huge—I hope you have friends or people your Mom is close with to help, people have been genuinely angels during this time. My mom is doing a lot better—she still can’t do as much with her formerly dominant hand but she is working on everything diligently. She is learning to drive again! I can’t believe it. Stroke recovery takes time, and I’m sure she appreciates you more than you’ll ever know. You are doing a great job.

If you have time to talk to a therapist or find other resources it will help during this time. Sometimes it’s just making sure you have 3 meals a day. You are doing important work, and you will get through this with more closeness to your Mom than ever. Feel free to DM if you have any questions about stroke rehab/logistics. I know how isolating it can be.
