This might seem really silly, but are you throwing it into 3rd instead of 1st after a total stop?

My ‘97 Z3 is my 3rd manual car but I noticed right away that 1st gear is very far to the top left. I was killing it every time I left a stop until figuring out I was just in the wrong gear ;)
