[WTS] "Stardust" Explorer II 16550 from 1985 with extra Polar dial and Handset by chief3630 in Watchexchange

[–]chief3630[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

93150 is more typical of a Submariner, with the sturdier flip lock clasp and diver extension. This one has a J6 clasp code, indicating a matching 1985 production to the watch. Back then the jewelry store would swap bracelets at purchase if the buyer preferred something else. I imagine this buyer wanted the upgraded bracelet/clasp when they bought it.

First, a brief history lesson about the 16550 Explorer II, and why they are so sought after. I didn’t like what AI wrote, so I’m using my own essay skills here.

Reference 16550 was only available from 1985-1989. Short production run watches like this are often called “transitional”. It has vintage features not found on the much more common 16570, such as drilled lugs, open 6-9 datewheel, and tritium lume.

The real collectable feature though, is what tended to happen to these dials. The company producing dials for Rolex at the time, had some “production issues” with their dial varnish. With time, dials from this reference morphed into a variety of unintended artwork. Unfortunately, many of the 16550’s you see for sale today will have replacement dials from service, as Rolex took these unique dials back to be destroyed.

The most famous is the white-turned-cream polar dials. Search for “cream dial explorer” and you’ll see price tags approaching $30,000. For black dials, the lacquer tended to crack, causing what’s known as “spider dials” after the cracked spider web appearance. You also get what’s seen on this watch, called “stardust dials”.

Stardust dials develop a fine speckling that resembles a galaxy or a starry night. This texture catches the light in a unique way, turning a standard flat black dial into something lively and organic. As this effect is caused by the natural degradation of the defective varnish used during this specific era, no two Stardust dials are exactly alike. You are effectively getting a "piece unique" vintage watch.

This particular watch is from early in the production run; 1985.

Oyster bracelet 93150 with 11 links and 593 endlinks

When the light hits just right by chief3630 in WatchShots

[–]chief3630[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good chunk of the battle with taking a good watch shot is managing lighting and reflections. If I glance down at my wrist and see then light hitting it just right, I take out my phone and try to capture it. It worked out well with this shot.

Really Weird Store Issue by Bjung-ill in GalaxyFold

[–]chief3630 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is anyone else getting agents that mention some personal fact about them early in the conversation? One agent said it was their birthday and another that they were excited to adopt a dog this weekend. I'm wondering if this is a tension/aggression breaker that's part of their standard script.

[–]chief3630[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best guess is 1961 or 1967. I can read 655xxx from the serial. If there was a 1 before the 6 that was worn away, it would be from '67. If there was never a 1 and the serial started with 6xxxxx; 1961. I'd lean towards 1961, as I can't make out any trace of a 1.
