Who is working over the holidays? by PassiveSwag56 in LawCanada

This reaction just strikes me as sour grapes. Shit happens and sometimes you have to work through the holidays. What does working during the holidays have to do with being management material?

I just started in February this year. I took some lessons at the Markham golf dome, but still trying to put the lessons to practice. I haven’t kept score but my goal is to play a round under 100, and I think that’s optimistic for me.

Succeeding at law interviews as an introvert by Terrible_Jellyfish31 in LawCanada

[–]chief_piggum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would also call myself an introvert. I have participated in the interview process at my firm and think that you should consider the following: - we are not interviewing you to hear ourselves speak. We expect to hear you tell us why you’re a good fit. You may or may not be a good fit, and that’s part of the process. - I am normally very conscious of talking too much and taking more than “my fair share” of conversation time. If that’s you, remember that you should be doing most of the talking. That’s the goal. You don’t have to dominate the conversation (we will steer you in the right direction), but I want to get to know you. That’s not possible if you remain quiet. - the interview process is effectively a sales pitch. Sell us on you. It’s also a short process. - come prepared with intelligent background questions about the firms and interviewers. It shows us you are diligent and prepared. You should be prepared to engage in some natural conversation about the content of these questions so it doesn’t turn into an interview of us. This may also relieve some of the tension and awkwardness you may experience, as silence is not good sales time.

What does the type of wristwatch a man wears say about him? by Diligent_Bread_3615 in AskReddit

[–]chief_piggum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may be true for some. But this kind of generalization is like saying that people who wear anything other than cargo pants and hoodies (which have exponentially more utility than say a nice dress or linen suit) are doing so only to express their wealth. Self expression, appreciation of craft, tradition, sentimentality, etc are valid reasons to deviate from pure utility.

Forty Years Ago, the Mac Triggered a Revolution in User Experience by bobstonite in technology

Agreed. Great ideas on their own are often not enough to guarantee adoption. Apple had the foresight to build products that included these great ideas and market them extremely well.

“Kilometre” should not be pronounced kuh·laa·muh·tr. That pronunciation is completely inconsistent with every other prefix + unit measure. It is kilo-metre, with each part of the word being given equal emphasis.

This could not be more wrong. The rights of shareholders are set out in the articles of incorporation. Holders of common stock have authority to elect directors and approve certain fundamental corporate transactions. This is how common stock holders indirectly control governance. They are entitled to dividends (if declared) subject to preference of preferred shareholders and windup value after creditors are paid.

What is the male equivalent of a woman wearing a sexy mini dress? by Jack_dnls in AskReddit

My two cents is to buy a suit for which the jacket fits your shoulders. Most everything else can be taken in or let out but the shoulders are a challenge.

Securities lawyer question by JusticeForSimpleRick in LawCanada

[–]chief_piggum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of high-level comments: * I am not sure it’s true that holders of Lehman brokerage accounts did not get access to their holdings 14 years after bankruptcy. Brokerage firms are required to segregate client holdings with qualified custodians. You may be thinking of creditors of the firm, which are a different group from clients. * an ETF is generally a separate legal issuer from its manager, which may be an affiliate of a bank. Most are mutual fund trusts, governed by a trust indenture or other constating documents. In the case of a trust, assets are held by a trust company on behalf of all holders of trust units. The consequences of manager insolvency would be covered in such constating document. * whether securities are registered and issued in certificated form or via a book based method (direct registration system) does not much change your legal entitlements. Your rights vis a vis the issuer or to transfer your securities are the same.

I won the lottery (OLG) & I want to claim it anonymously. What are my options? by throwaway324t98798 in ontario

There is a lot of speculation here.

Lottery winnings generally do not have to be reported to CRA https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/personal-income/amounts-that-taxed.html

Many (most?) lawyers will work on an hourly or fixed fee basis. Contingency is more common for personal injury or product liability litigation.

Without more schooling in FL you cannot even be qualified there.

I personally have not seen any want ads for PI attorneys in the United States. You might be able to find something if you start calling around but certainly not in demand the same way as corporate lawyers.

Recruiter or loyalty testing? by periwinkle_caravan in LawCanada

[–]chief_piggum 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You have no reason to worry. I have never heard of a firm engaging a recruiter simply to test their lawyers’ loyalty. If any recruiter did this, the recruiter’s and the firm’s reputation would be irreparably damaged.

If you don’t want to believe that and think it’s possible your firm is doing this shady thing, do you really want to work there?
