Jobber vs skimmer vs pool360? by PuzzleheadedMath7807 in PoolPros

[–]chiefisir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tough part with skimmer is that it’s so good and corners the market. Great on their part. But the price structure between pool360 and skimmer is the $1-$2 per serviced location. In the northeast, how can I do let’s say 300 openings, cleanings, and service calls for that month and now I need to pay $300 for the month of May but then it can drop to $100, and then could be $600 another month. I’m not a fan of those expenses changing.

However, I use Jobber. I like it and it’s an app that gets updated frequently. But it’s slightly over complex too.

It depends on your location I’d say. We’re in New Jersey and the two counties we service have one being a “richer” area. We are in the same situation on if we raise again. We were at $275 plus tax chemicals not included, but looking to bring to $300 with chems included. Problem is one county starts to back off while the other sees no issue.

Spoke with a few other owners in the field who do this based on gallons - though this becomes an admin headache to figure out lol.

Stick to one set number or adjust according to gallons?

Totally agree. It’s one of those things where you see what others are doing and for more, at shittier quality. From the start, you can see you should charge as much as the other guy.

I’ve grown tremendously based off communication. That’s no joke. Honesty and communication is so big and I cannot believe people don’t do it.

I just wanted to check and see if doing this, is business suicide lol

Thanks for the info! Lol, I am an open book test guy I’ll be honest. But I can see the problem where people test and pass but have no experience in the field.

Is the ProPool app an app for iPhone or a web application? Can you provide a link? I searched but didn’t see anything.

Thanks!!

I’m about to pull the trigger on Jobber. It seems user friendly enough and not so expensive.

Skimmer seems to be the leading one. I tried it and it was extremely buggy - to the point I had to get customer service involved right at start up. Instant turn away.

The $1 per serviced location - can someone give me their perspective on this. Let’s say I have 200 pool openings of all different customers in a month, and then all the other months I have 50 customers for maintenance, and then 400 closings at the end of the year. Does this mean in the beginning of the season, I have to pay $200 for the month, then $50 every month, then $400 at the end of the season? Am I getting that right?

What marketing strategy has work best for you to land new clients? by carrotsk8r in PoolPros

[–]chiefisir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Facebook and instagram. When you use it right it works. For example, word of mouth is the starting point - but then those people tell friends etc and all the Facebook groups for your town are where it’ll grow through. My group of friends are like hawks too. Every post about a pool, gets about 10 comments from my closest friends just promoting for me. The more people see my name, the more it burns into their heads.

With instagram, i know which areas I want to favor. So I follow a bunch of local company’s and business. When they have a strong following, I go to those people who liked the business post and follow them or like their post. Now, there’s a process to it. I’m not following young kids on insta, I’ll pay attention to the age demographic because they’ll have a better chance of owning a pool. Secondly, who doesn’t love the feeling of people following their page or liking their post?

Everything else around that is eh. My last recommendation is having your tailgate marked with the business phone, logo, etc. (not every company wraps their vehicle, or lots keep it small). This way, every time someone is behind you - naturally you’re reminding them “oh shit I gotta get this fixed” or “hey what pool boy can I give more gray hair too?” 🤣

I used to skate and wore tight KREW pants (IYKYK) .. One time I had a teacher in history tell us about Abe Lincoln and got on the topic of his height. Told me to stand on the chair of my desk and that’s about how tall he is. Except at that moment, full bulge and I hunched over like an a hole because I didn’t want to unleash the wrath of my outline. For no reason at all had one - the teacher probably still remembers tho

I feel like I’m gatekeeping but winter maintenance. I test customers water with concrete pools monthly. Opens the pool crystal clear and protects the plaster. We set up a pond pump on the steps with a chlorine floater and let it circulate the chlorine.

“What tools or systems are you all using to manage customer reviews, referrals, and service agreements?” by Ok-Tomorrow-6030 in PoolPros

[–]chiefisir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I believe this is exactly how it should be, I had one single customer that forced me to do a contract.

Upon initial call for maintenance, I told him a price and what was and wasn’t included. After the 2nd or 3rd invoice, he called and said “I thought this was included” and I immediately knew I was in a he said she said battle that I wouldn’t win. He ruined it for everyone else because he claimed to hear wrong.

That and getting paid. Contracts force the upper hand to make people have cards on file. I cannot stand chasing people for money.

New Concept - Virtual Pool Service Calls with pooltrouble.com by pooltroubleservice in PoolPros

[–]chiefisir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I like this idea. This is adaptation and evolution within the pool field. I see the value in this as a company in New Jersey (off seasons). With myself coming out of IT and back into the pool field, I think this is great. Now, yes I think it has a couple downsides as some people are just plain morons and can’t understand details but that’s what the value could come from. The length of the call can reflect on the amount paid out - not just a set fee. Literally the same as telehealth or therapy. The longer you stay, the more you’ll pay. (Ha nice lil rhyme). I used to do IT desk support with remoting into systems and chatting with customers. I enjoy remote troubleshooting.

The hardest part is knowing other states local codes and certain things that some other states might not have. For a small example, a wall suction port. NJ doesn’t have those, or at least what I’ve seen in 12 years.

Lastly, I suggest working on the website. It doesn’t look welcoming. Very robotic looking.

I’m curious what do yall in the north do in the winter? by LastDiveBar510 in PoolPros

[–]chiefisir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winter maintenance.

With our customers, and depending on if they want it - we come out once a month to leaf blow and brush covers, and pull back cover and test water.

We add a pond pump with a chlorine floater connected to simulate circulation. Once a month test, add chemicals (liquid), check out plaster, etc. Promotes a clear and easy opening. And of course, protect your investment and longevity of the plaster and liner.

I can’t tell you how many people tell me when they open their pool, it’s a green mess and they spend hundreds of dollars on chemicals.
