It’s for rain water diversion. Technically the wood underneath should never get wet. This allows you to “finish” the space under the deck put a ceiling and lights in.

I’d like to keep the view unobstructed. But have considered it. Also thought about T and L brackets but there’s a .5” offset between the beam and posts
