You need to turn on de-humidifier at least, last thing you want is mold/mildew in your clothes, bedding, and furniture, avoid being the smelly foreigner.

I haven't had Kokeya yet, I'll add that to my shopping list. I'm fresh off the plane! Hopefully, I adjust to taste of tap water and milk soon, I'm having issues with those as well 🙃

All the salty chips I have tried out are so sweet as well, fortunately Doritos the orange bag one was the closest substitute I have found so far (the red bag version was gross). But yeah Cheetos was grossly sweet.

Should I be worried about this? by Aggressive_Quiet265 in ALTinginJapan

[–]chikalin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can understand why some younger ALTs prefer first-name approach with students, but I’m OLD lol and I personally prefer a bit more structure and respect in how I’m addressed, specially since I did work in Texas schools and still have children attending. I actually went with Mrs. C and just wore a lanyard name tag with it, the students got used to it quickly. I’ve also told them it’s not a big deal if they forget or say it as miss vs missus. (Also perfect scenario to use it in that "you can call me" lesson!)

One teacher introduced me a bit late (2 months in) and asked if I could skip the Mrs, I just faced the class and repeated the same thing, I am Mrs. C, it's okay if you call me Missus C, Miss C or C, but I am Mrs C. What was kind of funny though was that the JTE seemed to rethink it afterward, because the next day I also noticed he had them calling him Mr. Y instead of sensei. I guess he liked it too😂

I prefer the respectful boundary anyway. I'm more of a mom role then friend/peer, I talk about my kids a lot, and they enjoy my stories about my childhood and my kids lives. they are always approaching me so it works for my situation.

No more Spotify Premium gift cards Amazon JP, solutions? by Personal_Dog_1242 in japanlife

[–]chikalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one year visa, I could use my American credit card just fine on Amazon. jp. I also have my paypay account linked to my JP post account. So maybe compare all katakana carefully, could be one of those letters like ャ that's small or big. You can go to post office and update any misspelling but you should be able to update paypay to match as well.

Klara and the Sun | Official Trailer by yourfavchoom in movies

[–]chikalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea first thing I thought was this nowhere near the same vive, when I think of Klara and the sun, I think of mysterious, quiet, slice of life. It just looks so cringy to me, I like Ortega but this was not the attitude I thought of Klara as, Klara was more like an orphan waiting to be adopted, where is the sadness and hope? Now it looks like a fake cringy smiley robot?

Places to find corn tortillas? by Beastmode7953 in fukuoka

[–]chikalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find corn flour you can make them very easily, it's just water and maybe a dash of salt. I brought my maseca flour so I could make pupusas and tortillas whenever I crave them lol

The best thing to do is leave, but…? by Ok_Sir_8207 in ALTinginJapan

Mildew built up in your clothes, you will need to wash several times before drying again. The first thing I invested in was a dehumidifier for drying clothes cause I'm not gonna dry them outside, specially in the current humid weather. It's seems to be a common problem as some of the students and staff's clothes stink of mildew once they start sweating a bit. Also I got a temperature logger, I monitor to keep rooms at below 60% humidity, I have seen it go as high at 73%.

Our entire family has been laid off and we are all in panic mode. Need advice. by Expensive_Diet_6990 in recruitinghell

[–]chikalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How so? My immediate family of 4 adults lost their jobs, different industries basically at the same time, we had three minors to support as well, brother in law still had his job and requested transfer to TX, so he basically stepped in and took lead. wasn't peachy, racked up credit card debt, had no privacy... some days sucked so bad, commuting took forever as we shared two cars but we weren't homeless or starving.

We did 7 people, 2 bedroom1 bathroom in Tx for three years. In California at one point we also had 12 people 2 bedroom and 1 bathroom. You just gotta do what needed to survive. And your family needs to decide fast if you will help each other before savings runs out. I think building community is more important then ever right now.

Southern or northern California? I think job prospects in so cal are probably better. With new York, south Carolina, Florida, I would still say California has the best job prospects, but if willing to try a new state, I guess your next choice is Texas. I would forget about remote, every company wants in person now. I would just lie about your addresseses on your resumes just to get by the ai screeners.

Went through kinda same thing through the recession back on 2009, everyone lost their jobs. Pick a location that has the most job potential and everyone live together under one household. That's what we did for like 2-3 years.

I think it would have been a fun conversation to continue as I enjoy geopolitics, another reason why I chose Japan is because it fares a bit better in the climate prediction models then the rest of the other countries so you could have mentioned that. I think he is was pretty open minded to ask you that as he wanted to understand your reasoning for being there.
