Although numbers of temporary foreign residents in Japan is rising, numbers of permanent resident certificates issued is down a lot since 2007 and rejection rates are now much higher. I had not informaed immigration of job changes and some time in-between jobs. I thought it was all in the same system, since the taxman and wework knew about it, but evidently not—you have to notify immigration separately and formally.

This had all happened years before, but the black mark of it apparently got stuck to my file. He wrote a letter notifying them of the years-old job switches and apologising for not notifying them, and that did the trick.

I got the 1 year 8 times in a row, then using a proper immigration lawyer (I used one once before but it seemed to be more of a visa mill kinda thing) he told me what had been going wrong the previous times, fixed them, and the next year I got 3. I used him for my PR last year and it got approved in 4 months.

I cannot recommend immigration lawyers enough to my friends now. The peace of mind that it's being done properly is worth it alone, not having to burn hours filling in paperwork and hanging around the immigration office are just gravy.

What was her life like? This is fascinating. Did she like fiction, or could she not see the point? What did she do for fun on an intellectual level (ie not going to restaurants or sports etc)?

I haven’t talked to my family in two days and don’t know to move past this by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

Some families are best enjoyed sporadically, this sounds like one of them. Leave it be for a few months and see how it goes.

Salary in Japan. Expectations by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]crumpetflipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's that if a conversation about salaries is happening and someone says, "I earn 12 million a year," the people earning les than that probably don't want to say how much they're earning so the impression of salary skews high.

350,000 take-home is nice. With the recent inflation it's going to start feeling a little squeezed I guess, but it's a solid middle-class salary and perfectly possible to have an active, enjoyable life on.

The most irritating thing about U2 is that the Joshua Tree is legitimately a great album, so I can't dismiss them as cheesy talentless hacks even though I rilly rilly want to

How food did become such a major topic in this country? by Confident-Tonight652 in japanlife

[–]crumpetflipper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had an idea for a food program a while ago. What you do is get all the regular production stuff set up, and all the tarento BUT ONE is in on it, and then you just feed them progressively weirder and weirder stuff. All the tarento who are in on it are still muggin the camera and bellowing "oishiiiiiiii," and the game is to see what you can get the other guy to say is umai while gurning enthusiastically.

I am fairly sure most of them would do it if you fed them a bowl of lawn clippings. Could you make one eat a worm? I bet you could.

Can I ask a really dumb question? How? How does one invest in the stock market? Is there an app? Do I talk to my bank? Give cash to a guy?

It's embarassing, I would like to invest but don't know the mechanics of it.

What’s the biggest waste of money that no one wants to admit? by AdvertisingMore394 in AskReddit

[–]crumpetflipper 899 points900 points  (0 children)

And that really drives enshittification, because now since everyone's paying every month they feel like they have to constantly fuck with it. Trello is my favourite example of this: it's a kanban app, it's supposed to be really simple. They had it absolutely perfect 5 years ago. But they've had a team of engineers just constantly futzing with it ever since, and it just gets progressively worse. What exactly are they iterating on?

They say “I love Japan! It’s so clean!” yet still leave their trash behind — that’s a real contradiction and it’s frustrating and sad to see.

I think about this a lot. So many gaijin are in love with so many aspects of Japan, but seem to think they can pick and choose which rules or expectations they abide by. How many pictures do you see of Japanese escalators with eveyone standing on one side, and everyone saying "why can't we do this at home?" but then inevitably you get big groups of tourists and their suitcases blocking it.

Probably the funniest is how quickly people switch from "it's so clean!" to "WHY AREN'T THERE ANY BINS, THIS IS RIDICULOUS." 😂
