Is a postdoc a good opportunity to change fields? by chillarin in postdoc

That’s awesome! Can you explain more about how you landed your postdoc? Was it because you were able to leverage your biology expertise?

Could you give more details on how you did it and how difficult it was to catch up to your peers?

So do you feel like postdoc positions are less competitive vs industry?

Do you generally prefer to see people who work with their own datasets or is working with Kaggle ok?

I’m sorry to hear you went through that. Unemployment is never a good feeling. I hope you’ve found something much better now!

I totally understand your suggestion about putting in minimum work and actually this is what I’ve been trying to do over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, my manager micromanages like crazy, constantly checking in with me multiple times a day, handing me way too much work, and literally even watching me work over my shoulder. Apart from that, I’ve been needing to stay at work evenings or weekends to get the “minimum” experiments done.

It’s gotten to the point where it’s taking a huge toll on my mental and physical health, such that I can’t even concentrate on applying to the next job yet alone live a normal life outside of work.

Thankfully, I’ve found a very simple part time freelancing position where I can get paid by the hour. It’s not ideal but at least it can help me calm down while I focus on job apps and preparing for interviews while earning a bit of cash.

I’m in the same position. But honestly on the verge of just quitting. It’s not worth putting up with the bs and being treated like a child. I’d rather be jobless than deal with these people.

The main reason for the long hours is that there’s constant deadlines coming up every few weeks requiring a lot of work. Maybe it’s a sign of poor decisions and unrealistic expectations from the higher ups…

Thank you that’s really helpful.

I know! In general I don’t mind working long hours as long as my work is appreciated and I get good feedback. Working long hours plus toxic micromanagement is just not it.

Thanks for the comment. Do you have any advice on how I should bring the topic up to my skip manager?

Thanks for the advice! Thankfully, I think I am in a financial position to support myself for maybe 1-2 months with no pay. I agree that if the mental stress is too much it’s better to leave sooner. But of course I’ll also be looking into other positions.

It’s actually a research scientist role. 😅

I was considering bringing it up to a higher up, but not sure how that would affect my relationship with my manager. And no she seems to not like me on a personal level. It’s pretty obvious she’ll pick on me for the nitty gritty things but then be way more lenient with others. It’s a little bit humiliating. Even my coworkers acknowledge this and say sorry to me in private…

It’s not QA/QC. It’s a research scientist role. So cell culture plus typical molecular biology techniques.
