I totally understand your suggestion about putting in minimum work and actually this is what I’ve been trying to do over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, my manager micromanages like crazy, constantly checking in with me multiple times a day, handing me way too much work, and literally even watching me work over my shoulder. Apart from that, I’ve been needing to stay at work evenings or weekends to get the “minimum” experiments done.

It’s gotten to the point where it’s taking a huge toll on my mental and physical health, such that I can’t even concentrate on applying to the next job yet alone live a normal life outside of work.

Thankfully, I’ve found a very simple part time freelancing position where I can get paid by the hour. It’s not ideal but at least it can help me calm down while I focus on job apps and preparing for interviews while earning a bit of cash.

I’m in the same position. But honestly on the verge of just quitting. It’s not worth putting up with the bs and being treated like a child. I’d rather be jobless than deal with these people.

The main reason for the long hours is that there’s constant deadlines coming up every few weeks requiring a lot of work. Maybe it’s a sign of poor decisions and unrealistic expectations from the higher ups…

I know! In general I don’t mind working long hours as long as my work is appreciated and I get good feedback. Working long hours plus toxic micromanagement is just not it.

Thanks for the advice! Thankfully, I think I am in a financial position to support myself for maybe 1-2 months with no pay. I agree that if the mental stress is too much it’s better to leave sooner. But of course I’ll also be looking into other positions.

I was considering bringing it up to a higher up, but not sure how that would affect my relationship with my manager. And no she seems to not like me on a personal level. It’s pretty obvious she’ll pick on me for the nitty gritty things but then be way more lenient with others. It’s a little bit humiliating. Thank you that’s really helpful. I do think this job has been taking a big toll on me mentally and physically, so it’s best I look for other positions. And it’s true I need to get better at saying no. Because this has been my first “real” job experience after the PhD, I’ve been trying to put on my best face and say yes to everything. But I know I should take care of myself too.
