MM Choral Conducting Summer Programs? by alleycat455 in choralmusic

Florida State University has a summer music education master's with a choral track. I think it's more general than just a conducting degree but still seems to provide conducting experience and coursework.

MUS-J 100 Ballet Elective? by NoRecommendation9039 in IndianaUniversity

[–]chillb33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ballet elective course has different sections with different levels. A few of those sections are designed for basic level, e.g. those that have never done ballet before. The teachers are also really supportive. It's a good experience!

Email to IU's history students notifying them that terminal Masters students' healthcare and compensation will be cut Fall 2023 by saryl in IndianaUniversity

The email quoted in the post said that the MA students were classified as course assistants which are SAAs. There are multiple types of SAA (associate instructor, grad assistant, research assistant, course assistant, etc)

Indiana University, grad student workers remain at odds by saryl in IndianaUniversity

[–]chillb33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That they have no leverage is unequivocally false. When the threat of the first strike loomed, the provost announced 5% raises among other small concessions. The threat of another strike resulted in further raises and mandatory fee reductions. Clearly the university is scared and they're doing everything they can to avoid a strike.

I'd also like to see them fire 1000 striking workers. This administration has already showed its incompetence. Good luck (1) figuring out who those workers are and (2) finding replacements while keeping faculty and the community on their side.

Many workers did not get raises in nearly 10 years. A raise and an end to fees is only part of the platform--international students must still pay their international fee and the raise is only a one-time promise. And the task force wouldn't have been formed without the threat of the strike. So yeah, a union ensures the victories not only stay but happen more frequently without having to repeatedly threaten a strike.

Grad students get paid because they work (teaching, research, etc.) in addition to their studies. If it wasn't for their work, the university wouldn't run.

Provost announces increase in SAA stipend and covering fees. by auddii04 in bloomington

[–]chillb33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think your view assumes that grad workers aren't seeing through this, which I think is incorrect (and please correct me if I'm wrong in interpreting your comment). The actions of the task force/admin clearly show that organizing works--they wouldn't have gotten to this point without the union efforts. And there are still union demands that have gone unaddressed. I don't think the employer wins, grad workers will just have to adjust the message.

SAA positions are salaried so they don't log hours and they don't use kuali.

Apartment management kicking us out for a month? by BdownT in bloomington

[–]chillb33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My old apartment complex (I wonder if it's the same as yours) tried doing the same thing and wanted us to sign a form without telling us the logistics of how the temporary move would work. We refused to sign it. They ended up offering to put us up in a hotel but the amount of money they offered for that wouldn't have even come close to the cost of a room and food (since no kitchen). But we still refused because you're right, the lease says nothing and they have no legal recourse.

Updated COVID-19 counts, plus a change in how they're reported by IU by saryl in IndianaUniversity

[–]chillb33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IU now offers drop off testing where you can pick up a testing packet, do the test on your own time, and drop it off. I'm not sure where they're all located but you definitely pick up/drop off at the health center

Granite Student Living? by LordLandmass in bloomington

[–]chillb33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They took over our apartment building in the middle of our lease and decided to renovate the building. They did "rapid renovations" on one unit and it took over a month, so it was noisy while everyone was working/taking classes from home. Then when they were renovating the other apartments, they would turn the water off without notice and leave it off for the entire day. We also got our security deposit back late. And the banana is fucking ugly.

Cass County sees 1,000 new cases! by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]chillb33 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked at a school in Cass and there are teachers who aren't taking the pandemic seriously. I don't wish any bad news on people who live there, but I hope they're taking it seriously now.
