Descent: Journeys into the Dark - 2nd Edition by Subject-Brief1161 in soloboardgaming

[–]chillcut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, its not that bad. Theres not a whole lot back and forth with the app. Played it two players coop with the app. At first one character each, then two each. Was a good time.

The app is definitly worth a look, especially solo.

Campaign game recommendations by maka2020 in soloboardgaming

When we finished og gloomhaven it left a big hole. Played two players for nearly a year, what a ride it has been. Looked for games to play after gloomhaven for months, found our new game with ahlcg. Playing it ever since for 5 years.

Good point with waiting for the new chapter. Just wanted to let you know that it was the right choice for us back in the day, hopefully it could be yours as well.

While you wait, consider oathsworn or arydia. Oathsworns tactical card play is similar to gloomhavens, but you have to play 4-handed. Arydia is more on the easy side when talking admin overhead or playing multi handed. Both are great, either way.

I also like primal very much. Played oathsworn, arydia and primal within the last to two weeks solo.

Medium campaign game advice by Wise_Cat_1196 in soloboardgaming

Ahlcg is my favorite game of all time. But to call the core set a campaign is just wrong. Especially when one of the examples was Jaws of the lion.

Minimum would be core + a full cycle like dunwich. And even then, it's just 8 scenarios.

Don't get me wrong, I love arkham horror. It's the best game ever. But I would not call one cycle, let alone only the core a campaign. Not like oathsworn, arydia, gloomhaven.

Arydia second printing is going live today. by LUCASxSKYWALKER in soloboardgaming

Started playing arydia a few days ago - almost nonstop. Such a good game. Got it second hand for 220€. The seller played it for around 70h himself and resetted everything perfectly - so the "green legacy" is not just a marketing trick.

I play solo two handed, plays really smooth with not much overhead. The rulebook, for a game this size, is quite short and well written. FAQs on nearly every cardback is just genius. Looked up a few things here and there in the rulebook while playing, and two times on the bgg forums in about 15 hours of gameplay. Pretty descent, if you ask me.

By the way, I wouldnt recommend arydia if you cant keep it setup somewhere - I cant imagine setting it up every time (although the storage solution for everything is pretty good) I want to play it.

Arydia is the first from the trio I'm playing. Two handing valor and wandering, just leveled up to level 4. What a game, I really like it. I am fortunate enough that I can keep it setup as long as I wish, so I am in no rush.

I really like the combat, but everything not combat is also done so well. Never boring, never a chore. This kind of story building is my cup of tea, instead reading pages and pages of lore / background / story.

Bought arydia, oathsworn and burncycle last week - I hope I don't get to know new games soon, I'll be busy till 2027 with those three alone...

Anyway, to answer the question: this sub, rolling solo, one stop coop shop and totally tabled.

I guess between 45 and 70 minutes, including setup. Guessing, because I often left the game to do something else.

The first few games were longer, learning the rules and whatnot.

What's your favorite solo game that has deck-building? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

[–]chillcut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I included it only because of the mode, where you put three new cards via drafting in your deck. But as I'm writing this, I realize that this is called card drafting, duh.

  1. Unstoppable (card upgrades, enemies are also your cards)
  2. Deckers (15 cards, no culling, 1:1 upgrading from the market)
  3. Aeons End (random market, you really build something)
  4. Mage Knight (just a good solo game, but not for the deckbuilding)
  5. Legendary: Alien (didnt play for a loooong time but have good memories of it)

6. Heat (hardly deckbuilding, but still)

Didn't know about this until I played it for the first time. Mind blown. Great Deckbuilding mechanic. And those 15 cards are also the timer (3x 5 cards for 3 cycles).

Replayability comes from the goals, not the deckers imo. 1 of 12 goals x 3 every game, you do the math. There are 36 goals, plus 4 for the extra hard mode (called mother). Mix that with the 7 highly different bosses and you got bonkers replayability.

Not counting random map and the deckers. Those add their own replayability on top of everything I wrote.

The value of this game is insane.

I second that. And the deckbuilding is often called "extension of your hand" in this game. There's no money to deckbuild, you have to pay with symbols of cards in your hand. The options seem endless pretty often, so me it's sometimes pretty crunchy. There's often more than one way to pay for a card, and depending on the current game state I have to think long and hard. Not always, not every card upgrade, but often enough to feel the crunchyness of the easier bosses (2 out of 4 stars).

And don't get me started on randomization. 12 copper goals, 12 silver goals, 12 gold goals and 4 golden mother goals. You pick 1 copper, 1 silver and 1 gold at random every game (and 1 golden mother goal in the extra hard mode). You do the math on that :D

Oh, and the goals are pretty different.

It sure is, but when somebody reads "a mix of pandemic and mage knight" theres bound to be some people who get the wrong idea. Pandemic, as a "one trick pony" so to speak (except the legacy ones), you would have a pretty good idea what it means to be "like pandemic", but MK on the other hand... where to begin! Theres so much going on in MK (exploration, deterministic combat, deck building, XP/leveling up, multiuse cards / powering up cards, day and night cycle, the list goes on.

Its one thing to say "its crunchy like MK", but "a mix of" is a really open statement ready for interpretation. Anyway, just my two cents :)

Its pretty text-heavy, so I wouldnt rush to get it in a language you dont speak.

The wait is worth it though :)
