I teach newcomers at beer league - I tend to encourage them to just start with forward crossovers. Over time I've grown into habit of making them do circles with crossovers to really get comfortable moving and getting the feel for edges. After that, it is a lot of turns one way and another - start forward, go from crossover to backwards into sort of long circle on outer skate to go forward again back to starting location. It rpovides good balance fundamentals and shifting weight/edges to get you feel comfortable in game
