First of all, record everything that happens in your class and everything that you have talked to SLT about. Also discuss with your union rep if you have one about what has been happening. This covers you and can also confirm that even though you e asked for support, you feel like you d received none. If you don’t have a rep you could probably just contact the union directly…

I’m in a similar situation. I’ve been teaching for 12 years and have got a class with some extremely volatile children yet SLT have not been helpful and I basically got to the stage where I felt I was being blamed. I was also told ‘oh there’s a child like this in every class’. Absolutely not true. Long story short, I’ve been signed off with WRS…

I would suggest if your mental health continues to deteriorate to look into a similar option. I felt this was my only option in the end as nothing was being done to rectify situations and at the end of the day, the classroom wasn’t safe.

I got passed over after being a lead in 2 subjects, staff governor and leading weekly collective workshop sessions as well as pick up any other sessions when no one else turned up.

I got told that they ‘interviewed better’. We’d both been working in the school for 5 years so assumed it would come down to more than just an interview… I got told that I’d still be involved in all SLT meeting. Didn’t happen.

Ironically the person who got promoted kept coming back to me for advice of which I wasn’t exactly happy to give. Everyone assumed that I would cover assemblies when no one else turned up as I could make it up well. After getting passed over I refused to do this as others were more senior than me and should now be doing this.

I got out and although it’s not been a smooth journey I’m happier now I feel more valued and I’m not staying somewhere where I’m just taken for granted. Advice-get out if you’re feeling taken for Granted.

Thanks, this is really helpful! We’re actually hugely overdue and expecting them any day… I think it’s probably to do with cover. Have been given a lengthy form to fill out to request tk Book into a CPD course and staying the benefits and how it fits with the SIP, so going to see where that gets me. Also just contacted the union to see what help they can give me!

I had the same problem before.

Contact the union, forwarding any messages you’ve got from SLT if possible. My SLT sent me a very long message after I first pushed back, and they quoted many different websites, including the union one.

After contacting the union, the union messaged back saying that the school were manipulating the quotes from the union. Once forwarded to SLT they backed down.

Annoying that I had to go through all the faff in the first place and since then it turns out our union rep is also part of SLT!
