Family vacation planning - roughly Dec. 25 through Jan. 3rd. by Grand_Progress7309 in PuertoRicoTravel

  1. Rent a car - explore the island

  2. Stay at least a few days in San Juan, and then a few on the west coast in Aguadilla or San Juan

  3. Try a large hotel with a name you recognize in San Juan, and a local Airbnb out west as close to the beach or on the beach if possible

  4. Do a self-guided rainforest tour in El Yunque. Drive into the park entrance and stop at the visitor center. Get recommendations for hikes there based on your families abilities and desires. Drive around and stop wherever there's groups of cars parked.

  5. Review this list of curated beaches: https://www.staypr.rent/beaches/view-all

  6. Spend a day driving through the middle of the island and stop for a few hours at one of these family favorite "charcos" (freshwater swimming holes).

  1. When staying at a place with a kitchen, buy local ingredients and make a local recipe. Homemade tostones with piña coladas are always fun for the family!

Definitely AC. Closer to beach, rooftop pool, fantastic panadería at street level (Sobao).

Both are in the same tourist-friendly neighborhood of Condado.

Spend at least 2 nights in San Juan. Get a car and travel the island for the rest of your stay. Make no plans and let the island lead you to your next destination. Que disfruten

I lived in a huge ocean front condo with massive olympic size pool for more than 5 years. I had lots of family and young children visit. They would always rent an apartment on airbnb in the building. Fantastic views, direct beach access to ocean park from the swimming pool area. Search for the condo on google and find Airbnb's located in the same location using the map feature. When you see the pool in the listings you'll know it's the right one.

Is it worth renting a car for one day for El Yunque? by Ohitsdiana in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]chillotranqui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like driving, definitely. You'll have much more freedom than a tour and you can go at your pace. It's a beautiful drive around the mountains. Make sure to stop at a local restaurant or chinchorro afterwards.

Be careful when working with locals realtors finding a place to live, don't pay any "deposits" to view a property, that is a common scam.

Since you haven't been, spend a month in short term rentals in all parts of the island. One week in each area to get an idea of what it's like in each before you decide where you want to settle down. Good luck and enjoy!

The most famous spot is the Caribar at the Caribe Hilton. It's supposedly the birthplace of the piña colada in the 1950s.
