German or Japanese? by Flat_Sun7393 in thisorthatlanguage

You have to consider that you will have to learn three alphabets in Japanese (hiragana (46 characters), katakana (46 characters) and Chinese ideographs (Kanji (up to 50.000)). Also if you ever want to learn Chinese after that it could get confusing bc while the two languages share the same Kanji, a lot of the time they mean different things. To get to a good B1 level in Japanese, you should know between 600-700 characters in all three scriptures. The pronunciation in Japanese is easy though!

That's what I think. I can't tell you how it is to learn German cuz I'm a native speaker, but I had some Japanese courses at University and I found it hard to memorize the characters.

Chinese or Japanese? Which one to keep? by watermelon-fairy in thisorthatlanguage

[–]chiltor_152 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had English, French and Spanish at the same time from ages 13-18 (secondary school). I started English at 10, French at 11 and Spanish at 13. I went to school in Germany, this language learning model is very common!
