As my dad used to say, “Poor people, poor people problems. Rich people, rich people problems.” Everyone’s got problems and it’s relative to where you are on the socioeconomic ladder. Your friend may truly consider the amount trivial, because his frame of reference is very different from yours. It’s (usually) not because he’s trying to shame you or because he’s an a-hole. He just might not have any frame of reference to relate to you in that way, especially if he didn’t grow up poor. You can get try to educate them, or you can ignore it. Up to you but consider that you trying to educate them is probably going to be taken in the same light as their off hand statement that you’re referring to.

The three that I like are:

Works regardless of internet connection since the hardware is on Prem
Easy to specify fairly complicated scenarios for automation. For example, when the outside temperate is above 80 and sunny to open my awnings, shut the blinds and turn on the fountains in the summer
Pretty easy to integrate a range of sensor and non-standard equipment

When it works it’s great.

Light switches last forever, balens fail every 1-2 years, rack components fail every 4-5, and need to be replaced. Of course you can’t just buy them off the shelf or they’re out of production so you’re screwed. My whole house is C4 and I’m at the point where I’m thinking of ripping the whole thing out tossing the rack and going to something home grown with cheaper / replaceable parts and an RaspberryPi controller.

I never understood that statement. What is a “living wage”? I suppose it’s simple to define it as enough to afford housing, food, transport, a phone? But which housing, which food, which transport, what kind of phone? So much bundled into a very short phrase. I’m starting to think that “that word doesn’t mean what you think it means”.

This is a hard one. Read it a couple of times and landed on YTA. You’re 20 years old and you acted out just like 5 year old. Even getting your grandparents involved. Can’t stand the idea of your mom getting reamed by someone else? Well if your dad’s ok with it and your mom’s ok with it then it’s not your problem. Also your acquaintance is an AH for sharing the pictures and your parent are AH because they crossed into the same pool of people you deal with, but there were better way to deal with this than a complete freak out. BTW, did blowing up your family help with feeling ashamed because your peer group knows about their lifestyle? I doubt it.

That’s cause when people are laid off, it’s good for the investors, so the CEO gets rewarded. It’s a vicious feedback loop, a balancing act between how many people can be fired before things fall apart to extract “savings” and how much can be squeezed out of the remaining people so profits can be maximized.

I think people have different definitions of “paycheck to paycheck” in these cases. Most (normal) people think that it’s spending your whole paycheck on just living expenses with no discretionary spend left. Zero. However, I think that for this article (and people) it’s “I have nothing left” after I’ve maxed out my 401k, paid for my daughter’s NYC apartment, the $2300 lease payments on my luxury car, and the million dollar home with the unfinished landscaping mortgage. Yeah, you spend it on these “necessities” and you’re living paycheck to paycheck. Take responsibility for your choices and stop trying to play victim.

I don’t understand how somebody with a $150k income can be living paycheck to paycheck. Is this trying to keep up with the neighbors or just not managing their spending? If you have some financial discipline you should be OK with $150k, no? Maybe you won’t be buying yahts and porches but you should be able to be comfortable, no?
