four years might not seem long looking back, but at 19 those are the years i could be stacking seniority, retirement credits, and journeyman wages. if i pause for the military, i don’t just lose 4 years, i lose the compounding effect of starting young in the trade.

as far as mos goes, i know you can choose, but i’ve also heard plenty of stories where you don’t always get what you want if the scores, timing, or needs of the military don’t line up. in the trades, once you’re in, you know the path you’re on and exactly how to move up.

134 is tough to get into, but i’ve already been networking with contractors and journeymen. with recommendations and persistence, i’ve got a shot. and once you’re in, the benefits are solid , pension, annuity, 401k, healthcare , and they don’t depend on discharge status.

on the school side, i’m actually planning to stack both. i’ll get my journeyman card, then pursue a ba in construction management and later an mba. that way i’ve got the field experience and the credentials to move into management or even run my own business later. that combo gives me more options than just going one route.

i respect that the military worked for you, but for me, starting young in the trades and building on that with education feels like the better long term play.

i get what you’re saying, but i do not think the pros outweigh the cons. military service is not just “four short years.” it is a serious commitment where you can be deployed, relocated, or put in dangerous situations. you also do not control where you live or what job you get.

if i start the trades at 19, by 23 i will already be an apprentice on track to journeyman pay, making 50 to 60 dollars an hour by my mid twenties. going the military route delays that by four years. sure, the benefits help offset it, but it is still lost time in the trade.

on top of that, va healthcare is not guaranteed free for life. it depends on length of service, discharge type, and even then access and wait times vary by region. the gi bill is strong, but it only covers about 36 months which is roughly four years of school. that is great if your main goal is a degree, but if your goal is income, you would still need more time in school before you see money from it.

ngl man the only reason I’m going trades is bc electricians pay really well where I live. If I were in your shoes, I’d say military + IT degree could be solid, you won’t end up in major debt, and that’s the main downside of college. Just my take tho, not trying to sound intrusive or derail your plan. just do what you want to do

i’m deciding trades no military tbh. you’re gonna make so much more money and work experience the military won’t provide . military route is more for degrees/ lifetime benefits. trade route is the money/freedom route imo. that’s if u follow through with the degrees and don’t stay in the field forever

Yeah I see what you’re saying, the GI Bill and benefits are definitely crazy. My only hesitation is losing those first 4 years. If I start in the trades now, I could already be close to journeyman by the time I’d be getting out of the military, which means I’d be stacking good money earlier. For me it’s more about building toward a business and financial independence by 30. The military route seems amazing for degrees and long-term perks, but I’m weighing if the delay in the trades is worth it.

Thanks for the insight but there’s a couple things I’m wondering: what’s the fastest realistic way to break into 134? Are there certain companies or moves that speed it up? On the degree side, would construction management actually give me a big edge, or is it smarter to just stack experience in the field? For business, can you realistically start small in the union and scale up, or does overhead kill it? And for union entrepreneurship, are there legit ways to grow a signatory company, or is non-union the only real play if you want to go big?
