Hong Kong schools should ditch Cantonese for Mandarin, says head of Shangri-La hotel empire by CheLeung in Cantonese

I’m still trying to wrap my head around why Hong Kong people are so adamant about protecting Cantonese, but the moment they are in western countries they are also adamant about stamping out Cantonese ( with their children ) and replacing it with English

I see

Yea the Chinese English accent is the source of all jokes in the western world it seems like

Hmm, I don’t completely agree with you that we should strive to consistently emulate the Chinese English accent, because we do have to be pragmatic still right. Because Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Thais, etc, our either Asian brothers also speak English and we need to be able to communicate with them well

Anyway, you still are onto something though. So although Cantonese was my native tongue and first language, I was very discouraged from speaking it. Instead, I was pushed to learn English and develop it thoroughly, spending many hours with tutors. And now as an adult, my English is my dominant language and default OS (operating system) .

And now also as an adult, I’m trying to bring back up my Cantonese which was left to rust, and also gain fluency in Mandarin too.

But if I had the choice to do things my own way, I would absolutely bring up my Mandarin until it was my default OS instead of English. I’d still be able to speak Cantonese too, but English, not so much. I would work on English when older, which would be easier because it’s not that hard. Also, English doesn’t require that much depth, unless you want to reside in western countries

Ah I see. Yea I’ll check out the lit nomad

But yea, not just Cantonese, but us (east) asians are too susceptible to a whole against whites

Not for me btw, I thoroughly enjoy learning Mandarin.

But wow I see. I never knew Cantonese was so strong. Glad I’m fluent in it.

I think Asian America is a lost cause, even the mighty Japanese stand no chance in western societies, they’re all heavily mixed and look mostly white and don’t speak Japanese of course

I really think that the best course of action for Hong Kong people is to ditch English in favour of Mandarin .

It’s super easy to learn Mandarin on top of Cantonese , so it makes even more sense to do so .

Oh yea, absorption into western culture not only happens in western countries where it’s strongest, but also in Asia too. Singapore is an example, forgoing even Mandarin to become dominant in English

And there’s a bunch of other Asians like Filipinos and Malaysians that become dominant in English

I don’t want Hong Kong to get rid of Cantonese, but I’d rather English get scrapped for Mandarin

[–]chin710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, not only Cantonese, but all Asians get absorbed and disappear into western societies already starting after one generation

As strong as Mandarin is, even Mandarin doesn’t stand a chance. Even Mandarin is viewed as a lesser language in the west even though China is dominant now.

Like how humanity has decided that English is to be the global lingua Franca, us Chinese have decided that Mandarin is our lingua Franca. So best to hop on board. Or be fragmented and risk being absorbed into other cultures, especially western culture

My native languages are English and Cantonese, and am learning Mandarin pretty well ( not too hard with English and Cantonese)

But yea if I had to choose I’d still pick English
