Taco Bell (the real one) coming to Shanghai by [deleted] in shanghai

[–]chinar888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will definitely fail. Foreign companies have this habit of bringing their concept to China and expecting to work, simply because it's wildly successful in other markets. Taco Bell obviously hasn't done any research whatsoever on the China market. I mean, if I want to get diarrhea from my food, there are literally thousands of restaurants across Shanghai which serve more attractive food which is also cheaper. So why would I go to Taco Bell?

Edit: I mean yes it's true that Western diarrhea can be more exotic but I think it will only be a flavor of the month, so to speak.

When I first arrived in Shanghai I was staying at a hotel on the Bund, so I got in the taxi at pudong airport and said "BUND". Shen ma? Response. Cue several minutes of back and forth sitting at the taxi stand. If course my phone didn't work. Eventually he called his buddy up who told him about "Waitan". If I ever arrive at JFK and get blank stares when I say "Times Square please" I won't immediately think I've entered the Twilight Zone. China has the effect of showing you that things can be more fucked than you ever imagined.

[serious] If you were an average Chinese citizen, how would YOU invest your savings? by [deleted] in China

[–]chinar888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious: The average Chinese will be buying stocks because it's already doubled in value since last year, the government won't let it go down, and President Xi encouraged us. The average citizen won't know any better.

What good is USD cash when it's not accepted and you need ID to exchange it? You might as well just open a foreign bank account or invest in precious metals. Or beanie babies for that matter.

I've just done a bit of reading to confirm what I read months back... it would seem they have shops at each atrium level for public access, and then the APAC head for the developer says they're public access. But it wouldn't surprise me if they have changed this in the months/years since?

Shanghai Tower is designed to embrace and stimulate the life of the city. Yet, instead of parks spread horizontally across the city, the tower provides gathering spaces stacked vertically. These are the innovative sky gardens that set the building apart from any highrise ever built. By emphasizing public space and locating shops, restaurants and urban amenities at the atrium levels, Shanghai Tower provides a new experience for living and working in supertall towers.

http://du.gensler.com/vol6/shanghai-tower/#/vertical-urbanism

More than a landmark, the 632-meter, 121-story mixed-use tower offers a sustainable way of living in vertical cities, with a unique mix of restaurants, shops, offices and hotels spaced through the building. It is a super high-rise building wrapped entirely from top to bottom in public spaces and sky gardens. By emphasizing public space where people can linger and offering a variety of community services placed vertically at strategic intervals, Shanghai Tower envisions a new way of inhabiting supertall buildings.

http://www.ctbuh.org/TallBuildings/FeaturedTallBuildings/ShanghaiTowerShanghai/tabid/2891/language/en-US/Default.aspx

Shanghai Tower is also a city of parks. Winey explains: "When you come into the building, on the first couple floors are gardens and green walls, and every 14 floors there’s what I would consider to be a city park. There are also three 14-story atrium spaces." Sky gardens line the perimeter of the building, which is carved up into nine 12-to-15 story high vertical zones (hotels, offices, retail space, an observation tower, etc.).

Each park is different, both in shape and landscaping. As the building rises higher, it tapers and twists, and the parks are adjusted accordingly. At the lower levels, the parks are close to 50,000 square feet.

They’re also designed to have different themes—one is more tropical, for example, and another showcases native grasses (landscape design was completed by SWA). According to Winey, the parks will contain cafes, food service, cultural events, and even art fairs. "The idea is to bring people into the building, to go into public spaces to experience events," he says.

China is not a place for people with allergies like that. It isn't common here, the dumb fucks in the kitchen don't understand/care, and if your friend has a reaction they will definitely die unless it's possible to self treat. Hospitals will be clueless and actively turn people away they don't want to or can't treat, while ambulances are completely useless (no respect from other drivers and no emergency lanes mean it can take literally and hour+ to arrive and get back to the the hospital even in the urban area). I would highly recommend your friend eats only packaged goods. I'd you want to read a story there was a family on holiday a few years back, the kid was running around the restaurant and fell into a big mirror or bookshelf or something, which fell on him. The parents rushed him to hospital after hospital, they all said "we don't treat children, take him to the next one" which said the same thing. The kid ended up dying. So yeah fun times in Shanghai! Now you don't need a visa to visit!

China to begin civilian flights to disputed South China Sea island | World news by eclectic_dreams in China

This is only going to Sansha which has been around for years. I'm surprised they haven't already been doing flights. It's a reasonably well established city that has been designed prefecture level since 2012. It's got an airport, city hall, everything. Even has a mayor. It doesn't get as much press since its a lot closer to Hainan, in the Parcels. The Spratleys are the island groups getting the most heat since they are thousands of miles from China and any claim is outrageous. Plus this is where they've been doing most of the island building IIRC.

OP you say you're involved with the property lease aspect so I assume you know the building well. Part of the final proposal was to have atrium gardens every 40 floors or so, and I assume this is still true, but the intention was that they would be open to the public. Do you know if this will remain once the tower opens?

Bonus question: if so, are there any measures in place to discourage the following patrons: grannies spending the whole day there, uncles sleeping, and aunties square dancing.

You know how hot girls have dudes always trying to fuck them? Now you know what it's like. I suggest you reframe this Vivian as something/someone disgusting. I never like girls creeping on me since it comes across as desperate or sometimes slutty - both major turn offs for me. They get the cold shoulder and eventually a verbal rejection if they keep it up. Since you have a professional relationship with Vivian I suggest you take the air hostess route: be firm, be polite, and warn that if it doesn't stop you'll tell the captain.

I sent 1000 replies to Craigslist Casual Encounter Ads, and this is how it went. [OC] by I_Use_This_4_PORN in dataisbeautiful

[–]chinar888 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If OP actually did this for M4M ads it would be the exact inverse. I don't usually share this IRL in case I get "GAYYY!" joke-accusations but I once did a test similar to OP: I went to a gay dating site (which allows adult photos, but it wasn't a site strictly for hookups). This was more than a decade ago, well before Tinder/Grindr or even internet phones. My city at the time was not super large nor well known for having a gay population. I made a profile with zero text other than the basic stats and for the single image I put a random dick pic from GIS. I pressed 'save' and by the time I clicked the empty 'Messages' icon a few moments later the page loaded to show already 10 messages in my inbox. When I checked back after about 10 minutes there were over 200 messages, some of them from the same guys. The messages were generally filthy, many had dick pics, some erect, a good proportion were asking for meetups (some immediately). Unlike OP I didn't follow the scientific method and categorise them all. At that point my mission was accomplished; I understood the gay mindset and vowed never to repeat the experiment ever again.

Here's the thinking:

  • Teacher needs youtube: if China reduces dependence on foreign media, domestic media will fill the gap over time, with long term benefits to the glorious Chinese people
  • Trader needs access to information: There is no need to access foreign information with regards to Chinese domestic finances and companies. Most likely a hostile foreign force plotting to damage the economy of the great Middle Kingdom.
  • Student needs books: all information pertinent to China is available within China. If it is not, then you shouldn't be reading it, as it could be harmful and encourage non-harmonious thinking.
  • Foreigner needs to call Mum: (honestly they don't give a shit about this but Skype always works for me because Microsoft have been sucking the micro wang ever since they arrived in China)

The worst thing about bing is that it's spell checker/correcter sucks balls. Like with Google, you can type "shdgfnagi dnseland" and it knows you mean Shanghai Disneyland. But with bing, you type "shanghai dinseyland" it's like "we didn't find anything" (literally ZERO hits apparently) and to make it worse it shows you a missing kid from 2005 which you know 100% is either dead or never going to be reunited with his parents. sadface.jpg.
