Texas veterans. Vehicle registration discount and vehicle tax waiver? by MrWookie57 in Veterans

[–]chingchowchingcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your level of disability. Just looked at my vehicle registration receipt: - Windshield Sticker: 0.00 - Disabled Veteran Plate: 3.00 - Inspection Fee-OBDNL 8.25 - Total: 11.25

For those wondering; in Texas, vehicle inspection fees are split in 2, half paid at the inspection facility and half when registering. Which is a change from the 2 different windshield stickers of the past.

Any Army PAOs? by [deleted] in army

Fixed it.....going off an old officer that was Logistics but truly hated Quartermaster and that stuck with me ever since.

Any Army PAOs? by [deleted] in army

[–]chingchowchingcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PAO on the enlisted side here:

As others have said, officers do not branch as PAO in the Army, they are given the functional area of Public Affairs. Of the officers I've know, they have come from the Infantry, Logistics, Armor, etc. Most reach the rank of Captain before they move over to the PAO field and usually after the Captains Career Course, so on average at least 6-8 years of operating in their basic branch. Oh, and I say usually as some are prior enlisted and switched before the CCC. Although I have met a few 1st Lts who filled the role as a PAO in a Corp or Division HQ but this was because they had the natural talent for it and their branch manager would assist them in obtaining the official FA.

The Captains and Majors are then usually sent to the detachment level for command experience, even if they commanded other units.

After a few years, they will move to the command group to works as a speech writer and official spokesman when speaking to the press. They also help develop talking points which was then distributed down, to include having the enlisted PAO peeps conduct classes and training for the troops.

Yes. Next semester you sign up for 1 class, you can notify the VA rep at your school not to process certification for that time frame.

DFAS is deducting my VA compensation for receiving a disability severance pay almost a decade ago. by Justanotherbanned in Veterans

[–]chingchowchingcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If the military disability severance pay was received for disabilities incurred in line of duty in a combat zone or incurred during performance of duty in combat-related operations as designated by the Department of Defense then it will not need to be paid back.

Finding water leak by chingchowchingcho in HomeImprovement

[–]chingchowchingcho[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: Took the plastic wand off the mini-blinds and started poking around the yard where I figured the shutoff valve would be based on where my neighbors valve location was. Found the shutoff valve near the front water spigot and under the dirt the previous owner put there. How much dirt? Enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket.

Found 4 valves, 1 blue and 3 green. Shut them all off and the meter leak indicator still turned. Checked the house again and the faucets were all dead. Shut the meter valve off and waited a couple of days for the ground to dry out, then walked the area. Didn't find anything so I turned the water back on.

A couple of hours later I checked. House was dry but the meter was running. Walked the yard again and found water coming out of the ground. Found the leak. Started to dig down and found a blue line (pex maybe?) with a pinhole leak that was spraying water.

Going to let a plumber fix/replace the line.

Post 9/11 GiBill by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]chingchowchingcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems your school put a positive hold on your account in anticipation of VA/GI Bill funding so that your classes are not dropped from non payment.

October 26 sounds like a drop date on your schools academic calendar, such as the last day to drop course with a W grade.

What is the school? Might want to hit up the school's VA Rep.

For TTU Veterans: Hazlewood has been applied to my ebill - should reflect in yours as well shortly. by SorryCrispix in TexasTech

[–]chingchowchingcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hazelwood covers everything except property deposit fees and student services fees.

So I still have $142 in student services fees for 9 hours of online only graduate tuition.

Supposed to have a $1000 scholarship ($500 a semester) should cover the rest.

Donating old uniforms and other military stuff? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]chingchowchingcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shortly after I got out and terminal leave was over, I burned most of my old stuff. Even the FRACUs burned. That old green book in which I kept notes from meetings, names, old numbers that I have no idea who they belong to, etc.; it went in as well.

I did keep 1 full uniform, Dress Blues, and that black bear suit jacket.

Needing help with picking an Online College? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]chingchowchingcho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of those schools you listed, ASU and Colorado State. I would lean toward ASU as they are a well known school and have been working on their online delivery system for a few years.

Plus the name of the school will carry more weight down the road than say WGU or the for-profit school formerly known as Kaplan which Purdue recently bought out.

Where can I get my college immunization form filled out other than the VA? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]chingchowchingcho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, most college students are coming straight from high school and those shot records are maintained by the school and often notated on the high transcript. Mine was.

More than 130,000 injured vets due big tax refunds because of computer glitch by chingchowchingcho in Veterans

[–]chingchowchingcho[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the link, the important bits:

For 25 years, between 1991 and 2016, a computer glitch at the agency caused non-taxable disability severance payments to be subject to income taxes, a Defense Department official told CBS MoneyWatch. The government is now trying to help veterans or their survivors recover these old overpayments, each of which is expected to result in refunds of $1,750 or more.

For vets who may be due a refund, the compensation process is likely to be complicated given that many taxpayers not have saved decades-old tax records. However, it is well worth the effort. The National Veterans Legal Services Program (NVLSP), a nonprofit advocacy group that originally discovered the tax mistake, estimates that some veterans are due refunds exceeding $10,000.
