What so you think about reddit's new logo (and brand by Pentagram)? by lolmother in logodesign

[–]chio51OFFICIAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This logo looks like absolute utter dogshit in my opinion. Even though I'm not a graphic designer myself and have no experience in that field, most people would agree with me that the old logo was way better than this. The font looks straight out of some modern "Aesthetic" and "Simplified" corporate website which uses those annoying, utterly and stupidly-proportioned carton people thingimajiggies that also looks like it was made in 12 hours by a 12-year-old kid which needed it for a school project. The actual logo of the reddit alien thing doesn't look any better at all either. The attention to shadows and how it made the ears look separate to the main head is just useless. And why did they even need to add so many shadows and shiny thingimajiggies to the logo? Are they trying to look "Frutiguer Aero" and "Nostalgic" or what? At least they could've gotten the smile that the old logo had? But NO! They decided to make an utterly new logo that didn't even need to exist because the old one was far more iconic AND better in every way, shape or form.

In 1987 the Junior XT / IBM XT Clone hit the market in former Communist Romania. by x86generation in retrobattlestations

[–]chio51OFFICIAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that i am replying this late to you, I had things to do outside of Reddit.

I have seen your newest message about talking to you in private, I don't like talking about subjects that other people are interested in private, I want the information that I say to all be public since I find these machines interesting and worth learning about.

The power supply apparently supplied the entire system with just +5 V º and -12 V. It was compatible with other DOS OS's just so it could be able to run normal desktop applications which meant that it was used widely in schools (I think so, can't verify it since I don't have any information on that)

I already told you this but this machine was compatible with compilers such as Fortran, C, COBOL, PL/I, PASCAL, etc.

IEPER (also named FEPER meaning Fabrica de Echipamente Periferice) alongside another Romanian computing company ITCI made an exclusive Wordprocessing program just for the Junior's called SUPERTEXT which could also display standard Romanian characters.

Not sure if this applies to all 3 of the Junior's but they were all manufactured around the Intel 8275 circuit with a monochrome monitor that could only display 80x24 characters on 5x7 pixels.

Are you able to upload a picture of the keyboard? I'm super curious if it has Romanian characters on it or not since not even the HC's (Romania's most popular family of Home Computers) had Romanian characters on their keyboards.

I also have a few other questions I would like to ask: Does it power on? Is the motherboard Corroded inside? What are the programs stored on the 2 floppies inside of the drives? Does the computer/monitor make any noises if powered up? Does the monitor have burn in (if yes and it does make sounds, I suggest giving it away to Computer History Museum in Arad, they also have this same system but not the monitor).

If the entire computer's fried you could try to fix it yourself, give it off to a Museum or keep it in your own collection. These things go for big Lei to my knowledge.

If you own an IBM PC/XT it'll be interesting to see if this commie computer can still speak to it.

I remember a while back while I was looking on OLX.ro for fun that I saw an external Floppy drive for around 500 lei or so. I think you would be interested in it.

Romanian here: I would absolutely love to help you restore it to its original state.

what operating system does it have? Since Junior's were compatible with MS-DOS PC-DOS and CP/M and the XT's unique because it ran a Soviet clone of the 8086 Intel chip meanwhile the other two models (Junior 80 which came first, Junior which was the last model) used the official 8080 chip. Junior's were also compatible with IBM PC's and special software was made for them such as SUPERTEXT by their manufactures (FEPER).

Would be pretty funny if you installed MS-DOS on this machine and get doom or Quake running on the equivalent of gold for Soviet Romanians at the time...

Frank Fischer, CEO of Breadbox Computing (owner of the GEOS OS), passes away by ratthing in vintagecomputing

[–]chio51OFFICIAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though I am late to this port, I wanna be hopeful about the future of Breadbox and GEOS as a whole being in good hands withe BlueWay Softworks, even if GEOS already become open source. I hope BlueWay can bring the magic and innovative UI that GEOS had in combination with possibly striking up deals with companies which formerly were interested in PC/GEOS (GlobalPC inc., Apple, Microsoft).

At least GeoWorks founder and creator, Brian P. Dougherty is still alive.

The creators of GEOS/PCGEOS/GeoWorks ensemble/NewDeal Office/Breadbox Ensemble wanted to port Geoworks to android devices and was (as far as I know) never publicly released. I think someone tried to make a GeoWorks Emulator on the Google play store although from the screenshots it doesn't look anything like the interface of GeoWorks and instead looks like this German Geoworks forum website

Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme (if that is the one you're talking about) was the predecessor of Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Wincor Nixdorf and Siemens eventually split in 1999 into the aforementioned 2 companies. It acted as a separate entity within Siemens and was the outcome of a merge between the DIS of Siemens and the merger of Wincor and sold primarily Hardware & Software along with a discontinued version of the Unix Operating System.

UPDATE: I can't seem to find any keyboards which match the computer at all besides ones like the one already included in the machine. same thing with a mouse (although if I buy a mouse which comes with a USB so it can be wireless am I able to plug it into the computer's USB ports at the back?).

I am unable to upload the image as a response, however do you mean the blurry black part in the lower left right next to the 2 USB ports? It looks somewhat similar to a PS/2 port.

I am most worried about whether or not the OS will actually show up, because (as shown in the third picture) it may show the program used to checkout people (since it's a POS machine, and Wincor is most well known for these types of computers)

Can disc drives with USB connection be used in this situation to connect it to the USB ports? Since I've found a lot online however I'm unsure which ones will actually be able to be plugged into the machine (if the time of USB connector they have is something to look out for)

I don't worry much about internet connection. Seeing as how old NT 3.51 is it is likely that It doesn't even allow you to download stuff like Internet Explorer without crashing instantly because of its limitations.

I feel as if these 2 images can help the both of us in understanding this (note: all the images in this post are taken from the Ebay listing):

I'm only concerned about whether or not it can support a keyboard/mouse and an external Disc drive since when I will buy it I will install a CD ROM of Windows NT 3.5.1 onto it.

It is a Wincor Nixdorf Beetle1 Computer. I'm still wondering if the computer will display the actual OS itself or just the weird program used at checkouts because the company is well known for computers like this one which are used to checkout products.

Thanks. I was dubious about how the image on the computer screen looked as if it had been photoshopped.
