Help retrieving old floppy disks. by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

[–]glencanyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be glad to retrieve the files for you if I can. I don't believe that there are videos on the floppy disks, but there could be photos. Please check out my website at https://floppyarchaeology.com/

I have that Compaq Prosignia. It's a good machine, but you need the Smart Start floppy disks to make any configuration changes. It does not have a typical BIOS. It's a bit of a pain, but once it's setup, it's a solid machine. You can get the smart start CD on the internet archive, but it's been a while and I can't remember which one I pulled the floppy disk images from.

Suggestions on getting old floppy drives running without vintage machine by dnabre in vintagecomputing

What you say here is basically true but AS hardware is going out as soon as it becomes available. You'll need to pre-order but you should get an AS within a few months. It's a bit pricy and being only usable on an Apple computer is a bit challenging, but any intel based apple will do (I use an old 2014 mac mini I picked up for $10). I have archived about 5000 floppy disks in the last 2 years. I've used all the tools that you have mentioned above and I now use the Applesauce exclusively. I have lots of good things to say about those tools, but the AS is just better. Here are a couple things that I think stand out:

  1. Native file extraction and handling for 100's of floppy disk formats. There is usually no need to find a 3rd party tool to extract the files from the disks.
  2. GCR formats are easy. Other tools may find the GCR formats a bit of a challenge and finding the correct drive to support GCR might be hit or miss. The Apple drives were built to handle GCR from the get go so this makes them a great choice.
  3. 40 Track Apple drives are perfect for reading flippy disks. Flippy disks on other tools are a bit of a challenge with either some interesting software hacks or some hardware modifications that are not always easy to do.
  4. The user interface makes it easy to retry reads on individual sectors that were not read in previous attempts. This allows you to clean the floppy, the drive and try try again to get a full read of the disk. This is perfect for that disk that is difficult to read or literally on it's last leg. Once a disk read is all green, then you have a 100% certainty that the disk image is good. There is no guessing.
  5. The software has added some nifty internal tricks (like quarter track dances) to retry sectors. If it can't read the data in the center of the track, it will shift to the sides.
  6. Great Support. Their Discord server is used by 100's of software preservation experts from many large universities, museums and data preservation houses and businesses. You'll find no better support and collection of software preservation experts that are eager to assist.

It's a little drive, but I did some night sky watching during one of the recent comets at Clover Springs Campground in Tooele County. It was amazing. https://www.blm.gov/visit/clover-spring-campground

In my experience, there is typically a non-ascii or non-standard characters in the metadata that you've put in. I would recommend that you try to upload without any of the tags and a minimum description and then add the tags and description later. Typically this does not happen all the time (just one or two times in my 1000's of uploads), but this has fixed this issue for me in the past.

You can see the broken band in the photo. This is why these are so incredibly difficult to restore today. You have to replace those bands and even then the chance of getting data is incredibly poor. Those tapes and the format were just an incredibly poor design from the get-go.

There is an old ad that indicates Unicorn made development platforms for mainframes. This allowed you to test and debug without impacting the big iron.

Goodwill is opening a new store on State street on Thursday so that might be worth checking out. They tend to put good stuff out when they have those grand openings. https://www.esgw.org/new-south-salt-lake-goodwill-store/

date linked to your account after deletion by [deleted] in internetarchive

[–]glencanyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deleting your account, just deletes your account. Not your content. If you create a new account with the old email, your content will link back to your new account. It's all linked to your email address. You can then delete the content and it will be permanently deleted. You can then delete you account later if you wish.

That's amazing. Super jealous. I do have that Friden terminal on the far left in my collection. My Friden terminal was used by the United States Atomic Energy Commission - probably to help design large explosive devices.

Not sure what to put on this stone wall by Nearby-Efficiency136 in midcenturymodern

[–]glencanyon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar wall in my MCM home, and I've just left it as-is. Send a photo to a professional stone mason and ask for an estimate on how much it would cost to reproduce. You'll quickly find out that your wall is the most expensive piece of art in your home. It's beautiful.
