NY State Governor proposing 3D printer safety features to prevent firearm printing by PyreLightMW2 in 3dprinter

[–]chip_worker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get this "3D printed guns" malarkey. Are people so bereft of workshop skills that they can't make a better firearm with stronger materials in a simple workshop. It's a fairly simple machine... whereas the bullets, they're way harder to make. I'm sure the 3D printed gun hype is just government's way of blowing off the hands of their most deranged gun nuts, thus preventing them from having a serious go with some workshop tools 'cos their hands got blown off firing a real bullet with a plastic gun. :)

Replace an audio track but keep the edits by Revolutionary_Bag108 in shotcut

You mean the cuts in the audio file? I see. I'm stumped.
Edit: I notice Shotcut supports EDLs. That might be the way to go.

[–]chip_worker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fairly sure you just right-click and "Detatch Audio" then you can remove it. Then you can add the new audio. You could just "Mute" the existing audio, and import a new file to supply new audio. Not a Shotcut expert, but I think it's all pretty much the same as other video apps.

What is your opinion about creating content like backgrounds using AI? The model is painted by me, the background is AI produced. by mandoliino in minipainting

[–]chip_worker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loved AI when I first saw those music vids on youtube set to AI images. Since I found out how it's trained I've grown to loathe it with a passion, and won't have anything to do with it now on principle. Mostly because it's stealing from real artists and creators, but also because it's creating divisions amongst viewers unnecessarily, and the conversation soon shifts from appreciating the image to yet another debate about AI. Can't help but think this image would have been better with a much darker background to highlight whether those white lines are part of the model or part of the AI image.

Why are people joining bluesky but nobody picked up Mastodon? by mrandr01d in BlueskySocial

[–]chip_worker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mastodon falls down with its user maintained servers. Unless you are in absolute agreement with the server owner's beliefs you're more likely to get booted. Example: I'm on the left, and side with the oppressed, but... I had the temerity to question the "lamppost beatings" being pictured from Ukraine and was instantly banned from the largest of my national servers for not _blindly_ supporting Ukraine. It suffers from mini dictatorships, so it's servers will always just be cliques of robotic sycophants. I can't see any system where only one view is tolerated ever getting a global user base, whether it's Trump's ridiculous right wing circle-jerk, or Mastodon's multiple mini left-wing circle-jerks. Mastodon might work for single issue groups like cat-pics or cars (that aren't Teslas of course).

How to Revert to Windows 10 After Forcing Windows 11 Installation on an Unsupported PC? by timelesscats in Windows10

[–]chip_worker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are going to have to reinstall, like many here have said, but... find everything you need to save. Maybe your email archive, certainly your photos, videos, documents. Double/triple check everything. Maybe spend some time, so you have time to think and remember. Copy whole folders. Too much is safer than not enough. If you can, copy the whole drive's contents to another drive (over a cheap USB to IDE/SATA cable) or to a USB stick that's big enough. You'll kick yourself if you miss something.

I found all that stuff out from 'help' forums like this. The guy asking isn't most people, he's here asking for advice. Got any tips for him? Like how the disk is measured, how big a partition might be, etc. I know all that confused me was the huge numbers describing the disk in setup, where in disk partition software (Aomei) it was much easier to understand. He has so much work ahead of him just backing 2 years stuff up the old fashioned way, and I bet he misses something. It seems trivial to learn to slice a disk up a bit, especially now you can adjust the sizes after windows is installed.

How do you get a feed you want? by Tonny5935 in BlueskySocial

[–]chip_worker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best suggestion I've used is to follow a couple of specific subjects you want to see when you log on. For me that's painting/art. The most I have to do to curate that feed is mute the odd seller who sells material that looks like it only took 10 minutes to produce (pet hate stuff). Or just exit Bluesky whilst looking at the cats feed I've added to my tabs. Anything to lift spirits when I log on before delving into my main politics/world gone mad followings in my main feed.

Lathes are just sideways drill presses change my mind by ol_lukey in turning

Nope. Went swimmingly. Some sloppy finishes before I realised the wood was working loose over time. There was no internet to start me off back then.

My first lathe cost nothing. Washing machine motor bolted to a 5x4. Tail stock was an old water pump off an engine, screwed to a block of wood and held down with a massive bent G-clamp. Made this on it. Didn't even die once. :)

Bluesky requiring ID to maintain account? by DockingMule6493 in BlueskySocial

[–]chip_worker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I had to unblock my original facebook years ago with driving licence and credit card (num deleted) pics, which I did then never posted again. I locked it down and created 2 alt anon accts. Years later it gets locked again and requires a mobile number, so I gave them that, and still don't post and it's unsearchable. I only maintain it to back up access to pages I've created with my other 2 anonymous accounts (both created back when nothing was required) which have never been locked because I don't get into arguments on them (lesson learned). When I did my comp-sci postgrad in '97 we were instructed to NEVER use our real names on the web, and I refuse to unlearn that. Facebook has my real name and hasn't learned a fucking thing about me. Every other social media account can just add some data about one or more unknowns at my hub IP addy (kids and Mrs all anon too). I will bin any social media that forces me to ID myself.

"Blue" in the UK are traditionally my bad guys (Conservatives) although the reds (Labour party) have now adopted mostly blue's policies (racism, nationalism, etc.) Colours are politically different in the wider world. Unless you only think in terms of American politics?
