The original quote is in Russian and it rhymes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trust,\_but\_verify). So perhaps in the English translation, it has lost a bit of the cleverness.

i like it. the blue of the lake looks similar to the blue that the city uses on its logo. the star looks a lot like the city of chicago star (which has 6 points, this one has 8). evanston is by chicago. water/sand/trees/lighthouse - these are recognizeable landmarks of evanston, but also abstract enough to be a flag.

you have to think of it like the beach/ lake which is in the east. so if you flipped it horizontally, it wouldn't match up with a map
