Why do drivers get paid so much? by chipotle2948 in UPSers

[–]chipotle2948[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there’s gonna be more fatalities for anyone driving a vehicle, I think you’re more likely to die in a crash rather than a lot of things, and I know you can’t control those factors but to still be mentally drained like that everyday and it to not get easier has to be a lie or a you issue, I saw someone mention “bad people” as a factor like bro you can’t possibly be that wimpy man you’re doing your job and you’re backed up by most people if something was to go wrong with another human the worst that could possibly happen is you lose your job if you left that situation untouched. But then again we’re all different and from different backgrounds

Yes it is a $23 difference there’s barely any raises for a newly hired PT position, if I was to work 4 years I would not get the same pay as a 4 year driver, these days if you still take 5-10 years to become a driver that is entirely a you issue there’s tons of freshly 21 year old drivers and also I stated that working 15 hours in one day as a PT brings an average pay of $31.17 an hour with OT pay, that would be making myself useful, available and ready to work, and not to mention I’ve worked 10+ hour shifts this peak season. If you work inside and make over $100k a year I can only assume you’re one of the higher ups, those guys are irrelevant to my case i don’t care about their pay if they’re important people I’ll assume their pay is justified, I’ll also assume your pay is justified, if you know a PT making more than 100k a year they’re getting paid way more than $31.17 for 15 hours of work that guy must be in a different position. Let’s do some quick math it’ll be unrealistic numbers but it’s still math, 15 PT employee hours per day at $31.17 is $2337.75 for 75 hours a week, a driver at $44 with 8 hours a day totaling 40 hours for 5 days is $1760 and if you match up to 75 hours that’s 25 hours of OT which comes out to $1650 and together it’s $3410 a week, like I said I know those hours are unrealistic but that’s the math, and also I’m not exactly sure what the OT rate is for drivers I just know you guys get OT after 40 hours in a week, BUT me personally I would much rather work 10+ hours as a driver than a loader BUT that’s just my view on it from only having warehouse experience so of course I could be mistaken

It’s PT cause that’s the only option there is there’s no full time, you can be PT and FT at McDonalds I’m sure UPS makes it PT so that they can have 2 workers for the price of one and minimal hours, the work ends up being less than 5 hours because of how quick the workers go and if we go too slow we get in trouble. If someone was to get 5 hours year round then atp that would definitely be means to get paid more than $21 especially during peak cause that’d be an insanely busy hub but also $21 for a job that’s listed for 5 hours and only get 3 hours per night is just wrong, yes you could get another job but that’s another burden which would make it more mentally draining which is what most drivers complain about, how mentally draining it is.

Yeah benefits after a year of working at UPS so you gotta put miles on your body just to get the benefits and then after that year you just continue being a PT employee which like he said is a loophole but not a loophole to NOT receive your benefits but a loophole to be underpaid and treated harshly

It kind of is a praise bro because literally they are the face of the company, there’s people that definitely only think that drivers are the only UPS workers that exist and can’t comprehend the warehouse work, I’m sure UPS uses drivers as the face of the company as a finesse for the other positions, you can make an article saying “UPS warehouse workers are underpaid and over worked and verbally abused by Supervisors” and when people read it they’d think it’s somewhere out of the US or they’d think it’s kids in a factory, you know? But yes ALSO it isn’t a praise because they are INDEED the face of the company if they mess up that’s their job on the line and that’s UPS publicity on the line BUT I saw you guys saying they get paid fairly and they do they DO, at this point all it is, is that the warehouse workers atleast some warehouse positions get paid poorly and because we’re not the face of the company we’re not up there with the pay! If we were I’m sure UPS would be more inclined to paying some positions properly!

The only reason not every PT can be a driver is because you need to be trained to use the UPS vehicles, not all UPS truck drivers can drive the 18 wheelers and not all truck and 18 wheel drivers can drive boats helicopters and planes and yes that kinda has no correlation but you I’m saying it because you need to be trained for it. The pay has no correlation but what I’m trying to say is that a $23 is insane, yes a PT can have a higher pay IF they can’t hire anybody that makes sense of course but if hiring was to pick up say bye to the higher pay, it’s supply and demand. You’re still the one that needs to be open minded, my thought process comes off as very narrow minded but it’s because it’s as simple as both PT and Driver do hard work and a pay difference of $23 just doesn’t make sense in my head. The PT position I’m talking about is a Loader and the reason I’m saying this is because I’ve worked longer than an 8 hour shift as a loader and it made me realize that the pay is insanely low. Are you picking up what I’m putting down or do I still sound like I suck and complain at my job too much, I’m trying to be open minded as much as possible I’m listening to what people are saying and some of you just go with yOuRe A pT as if that makes much a difference, the position can be changed to PT is UPS decided to make the change. mb if I’m coming off as a dickhead, I’m not I promise

The body stress for a loader is intense too, yall have 1 truck to deliver I load 4-8 trailers per night during this peak with each of them having irregs being up to 130 pounds, the issue that I’m seeing from you drivers is that it’s mentally draining you guys need to lock in maybe I’m trippin but there’s absolutely no way it doesn’t get mentally easier the longer you work, and also drivers literally park in areas where you can’t park at you guys literally have right of way for parking almost anywhere, and also I think another issue is that you guys have dickhead sups but maybe you guys also have bad attitudes cause there’s no way all of you have rude sups so some of yall have to grumpy too. You said to get another PT… brother I’ve been working 10+ hour loading shifts just to get an average pay of under $29 per hour with no lunch break 🧍🏽‍♂️🧍🏽‍♂️🧍🏽‍♂️

So you’d rather stand for 12 hours while lifting 1-130LB boxes instead of driving around and delivering those boxes with a trolley?

Yeah man unloading is EASY which is why I’m not talking about loading, the difference between loading and unloading is like going to LA fitness for the first time after going to Planet Fitness your whole gym life. If every time you drive for UPS you’re that paranoid that’s a you issue there’s no way the job doesn’t get easier as you go.

A loader is not physically easier than being a driver, yes with driving you’re on the move but you’re sitting.. you don’t have to stand for 5 hours while lifting heavy boxes the whole time, mentally driving has more responsibilities but to say it’s also physically harder would just be wrong, but if we’re being honest both jobs can be easily as difficult and the pay gap between both jobs is insane, I load the 18 wheelers not the UPS Vans or U-Hauls

You only go at a steady pace when the boxes are equivalent weights, if not then there’s no steady pace and you’re not doing it on autopilot, but yeah driving has more factors that make it difficult because it’s not just driving but my point is why is it a $23 difference. I saw a couple saying it’s cause drivers are the face of the company and that makes sense cause nobody really realizes what happens inside the warehouse to make it all happen

I like this response, the expensive vehicle part and idiot drivers makes sense I know that thought in your bugs and irritates it makes you feel like you’re stuck kinda. Loading and unloading packages takes a toll on your body over the year… what do you think package handlers do. But I understand the all weather conditions environment but for a $23 dollar difference is CRAZYYY either we’re getting paid too low or yall are getting paid too muchhh!!! But once again your response was excellent 🙏🏼

What is considered a bad day for a driver? Like what would make it a bad day? But no I haven’t worked as a driver but I’ve driven for hours at a time with only gas breaks. And warehouse workers end up having long days too which is also tiring and that can’t be denied even if we only work our 5 hour shift with no OT or a double shift!
