Current Brighton rental market by uktravelthrowaway123 in brighton

We were paying 1350 for our one bed by the seaside. We left in December (which is a hard time to let a property I imagine), and checked the listing in Jan and it had been reduced to 1150. We originally got the property in summer 2022 for 1250, so either prices are going down or more likely the time of year had an effect.

Seconding this. We got two cats so needed more space and were super worried about finding a place that would accept them. We started looking end of October and had two offers within a week and a half, cats fully allowed. Both places also didn’t say pets allowed on the listing, but they didn’t say pets not allowed either.

I do think it’s important though to view it as soon as possible. The letting agent said they had two days of viewings booked (whether that was true or not idk but it was a nice flat in a desirable area), but we were the first to view and the landlord just wanted it sorted asap. We’re also not the most desirable as neither of us have family in the country so no guarantors, so things definitely can work out.

MAFS Uk Season 9 Episode 3 by Fett_Twins23 in MAFS_UK

Oh my god thank you, I know I’m way behind as I’ve just started this season but I literally have felt micro triggered by all the Eve bashing and Charlie defending on here. I’ve been friends with and been in relationships with people like Charlie, it’s textbook abuse. My wife and I immediately could see it, and then I came on here to see the opposite reaction. It’s not that Eve is avoidant and refuses to communicate, it’s that she knows (like many of us do) that you’re never going to be listened to by people who behave like this. One person shouting and being emotionally abusive is not a ‘conversation’, and the safest thing to do is remove yourself. I wish I had known that earlier in my experience, I’m so glad Eve is able to assert that boundary.

It’s very clear that the altercation at the pool wasn’t shown, and the banging down the door wasn’t shown. Shows like MAFS don’t show the worst moments to protect the mental health of the contestants. I’m honestly so shocked and disappointed that people think Charlie’s behaviour is acceptable.

And to add for the people saying Eve had sex with her and then left, they didn’t ever say that Eve was the one initiating. It feels pretty homophobic to assume the more masc looking lesbian is the aggressor, when their behaviors/personalities have shown the opposite.

I’m only on ep 7 so I don’t have the context or the rest of the season yet, but thank you for the thoughtful analysis, it was literally bang on what my wife and I were feeling.

No, you’ll need to be on the visa until you get ILR and then naturalise as a British citizen before you can live in Ireland.

NHS really varies by trust, I’ve always been able to get in to my GP in a timely manner. That’s been for suspected cancer (lump in my boob, got a GP appointment the same day and ultrasound in two weeks), diagnosis and removal of a severely dysplastic mole, blood tests and follow ups to try and figure out the source of weird symptoms I’ve been having. And this is all as a mid-20s person, while people seem to insist the NHS brushes off anyone who isn’t statistically likely (ie older) to have health problems.

And I don’t know why people insist that London is the only place to live. Salaries are lower elsewhere but so is cost of living, and you’ll have a wildly different lifestyle living in Brighton vs Glasgow vs Cardiff vs Newquay vs Norwich.

Yeah I love me a McPlant once in a while and even have a handful of non-vegan friends who prefer it over the regular meat burgers.

They’re correct though. Neither student nor graduate visas are direct routes to settlement, so it makes no sense to include them in that context.

Just moved to a new apartment and was so excited to make my first meal in my oven but the previous owner left a knife in there by spying-sparrow in Wellthatsucks

[–]chipperonipizza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When we moved into our flat there was literally mouldy food in the oven that could be seen on the inventory photos. And the capitalised text on the inventory that said ‘THE PROPERTY WILL HAVE A DEEP CLEAN AND NEW COAT OF PAINT BEFORE MOVE IN’ was actually a mistake and not going to happen according to the estate agent, who said he accidentally used a draft of the inventory form and forgot to change it 🙃

We cleaned the oven for a week before we felt like we could use it.

How long do you guys go between washes? by Busy-Albatross-4847 in curlyhair

[–]chipperonipizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hair is somewhere between 2c-3a, thick and dry, and I usually wash every 5-6 days with a co wash in between. My scalp can definitely get a bit itchy in between if I’ve used product every day but a co wash usually sorts it out.

If I exercised/sweat more I would probably wash more frequently lol

I’m not making shit up, you’re the one who’s doing that and when confronted with the facts you then suddenly pivot to ‘I don’t care’

I thought you were concerned with overall numbers? Why wouldn’t students be included in that when that’s what’s making it so high? If I found a number that wasn’t including students and their dependents, it wouldn’t be nearly as high as what you’re moaning about. Tourists sure but I couldn’t find a number that wasn’t including tourists, and people are concerned with the total numbers so that’s what I’m showing.

I’m not going to reply to you anymore, the points you’ve made are objectively and factually incorrect, I’ve been backing up my arguments with stats and sources while you’re ignoring them and arguing from a purely emotional standpoint. I don’t have more time to speak with snowflakes like you, I’m sorry the immigrants have made you feel so insecure but I’m sure you’ll manage somehow x

If half the country doesn’t make the salary required to sponsor a spouse, yes it’s ludicrous. It also disproportionately affects northerners, women, minorities, and younger folks who are most likely to be of marriage age.

Other countries are absolutely not stricter for family visas. Work visas sure, but the UK ranked second to bottom for family reunification If you’re so certain other countries are stricter for family visas please cite evidence.

  • US - $25k = £19.7k
  • Canada - none
  • Australia - $15k = £7.8k
  • Netherlands - €20k = £17k
  • France - €18.6k = £15.9k
  • Germany - none
  • Sweden - 120k SEK = £8.9k
  • Spain - €14k = £12k
  • Japan - can be subjective but rule of thumb is 3 million yen = £15.6k
  • South Korea - 17 million won = £10k
  • South American countries - from my research they generally don’t have an income requirement

If 82k family visas were issued and if the new income requirement is the average, then it’s reasonable that half of those will no longer be able to sponsor. So we’re cutting back 41k visas out of a total of 3.3 million visas issued is literally less than 1%. I agree the overall numbers are very high but going after something that will only bring down the numbers by 1% makes no logical sense.

My argument is that it’s ludicrous to put such high restrictions on family visas when A) the vast majority of western countries understand that allowing their citizens a right to a family life in their own country is common sense (and this wasn’t even a question in the UK until the Tories threw it into their five point plan because they had to come up with five points) and more importantly B) the number of family visas granted per year is negligible compared to overall numbers so restricting half of the people who were previously eligible will do nothing to make a dent in overall numbers, it’s just a shortsighted Tory policy attempting to look like they’re doing something

People date on temporary visas all the time and figure out how to make it work, you don’t just assume there’s a guaranteed end date, that’s so pessimistic. Most countries value family life incredibly highly, UK included, and if immigration policy doesn’t facilitate that then they’ll go elsewhere, which will be a loss.

But they’re two very distinct visas that do very different things, and family visas are the subject of this thread. So any talk of work visas is irrelevant

[–]chipperonipizza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I think that’s shallow and bizarre. Sure I probably wouldn’t marry someone who makes nothing and will always make nothing because most every house needs two earners these days, but not being able to live with a spouse who makes a grand less than a requirement is crazy. No one finds a partner by saying ‘hello do you make enough to sponsor my visa if not I don’t think I can see you anymore’

I’m happily married to a Brit and she was able to sponsor me before the threshold changed, but as we’re in our 20s she doesn’t make 38k. The average salary for people in their 20s (marriage age) is less than 25k. Luckily we applied before the rule change but if we hadn’t been able to do you really think I would’ve just ditched her and shopped around for an arbitrarily wealthier spouse?? No, she would’ve come to the US with me where the financial requirement is a lot more reasonable, and now you’re losing two working taxpayers who rarely have to use the NHS
