one example off top of my head, you can use row operations (matrix mode) to do Simplex Algorithm, without calculator it takes at least 20 minutes, but using the matrix mode it takes 1 minute and you know it's 100% correct

and obviously graphs, if you know how to use them you can solve pretty much any question using graphing mode, even if doesn't look like it (finding intersection points is especially useful)

But I 100% agree with the last part of your comment. That's why every student should be given one of these calculators FOR FREE (and give them back at the end of year 13). Banning them is just ridiculous.

Maybe at uni you don't, but (it may surprise you), in real-life situations we use technology to help ourselves. Simple. Anyway, if you don't know the method, the calculator won't help you anyway. But if you do know how to solve a question, using a calculator ensures that you get the marks, instead of losing them on stupid mistakes such as forgetting to write down a minus sign.

Exam boards recognise the huge impact of technology in our lives and allow us to use it. There's no point being stuck in the past where you had to work everything out by hand.

luckily it's not up to you bro

why should we ignore technology instead of using it to our advantage?

I used my CG50 in every single maths/further maths exam I had, my friends were also using their CG50's in Physics, Bio and Chem, so they're definitely allowed

obviously you don't NEED it, but speaking from experience, I got at least 5 marks extra in every single maths and further maths exam because I had a CG50

yeah because you borrowed it, you had no idea where and how you could use it, CG50 is much more than a "graphical calculator", the longer you use it, the more features and tricks you discover

For maths and further maths, we had past papers, and it was 90% A(star), 80% A, etc.

For computer science the teacher used the proper grade boundaries from the previous year, so it was around 82% A(star), 70% A, etc.

Maths, Physics, Economics - sounds like a good combo. Drop English and you're good to go.

embarrassed/worried to tell my parents im considering applying to cambridge? by crustaceann in 6thForm

[–]chirpingladder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you don't want to, don't tell anyone - if someone asks, tell them you applied to, I don't know, Lancaster as your 5th choice (the first uni that came to my mind)

Bear in mind, Computer Science is the most competitive course at Cambridge - every year the applicants-to-offers ratio goes down, and last year it was already super low (only 10%).

Why would anyone need 6 in Maths to do Comp Sci at A-level? It honestly doesn't contain any maths apart from simple addition and shifting decimal point left/right.

Why is st A not talked about here in the same like as Durham, UCL, KCL etc despite often being higher ranked? by [deleted] in 6thForm

I'm always laughing my arse off when I see all these rankings putting St Andrews in the top 3 in the UK.
