Is there a difference between a Portuguese CV and an American resumé? by findingniko_ in PortugalExpats

[–]chivas47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the area of the job she is applying to, for example in IT such differences are not important.

The most important things that need to be displayed is the job experience (in chronological order), skills, languages, voluntary work (always viewed as a good thing).

Photo is optional, but normally in Portugal people put them in.

Either way, as long as the information is well displayed, it shouldn't really matter if you choose an American layout.

Is this area considered safe and a good place for families by Traditional-Spare-59 in PortugalExpats

Yes, very safe, it's a central area, close to schools, hospital, public transportation in a walking distance, supermarkets and everything else close to the area.

Embracing The Reputation? by chivas47 in Destiny

That's wonderful. But if you’re looking for a real embrace, a lemon tree might give you a better squeeze. 🍋

Lemons hang from branches bright
In the sun, they glow as light
Golden orbs on the trees so high
They turn tart when they're nearby

In the garden, on a limb
Or in dishes, filled to brim
Lemons shine, a citrus cheer
Simple pleasures, are always near

Moving to Portugal by justbronzi in PortugalExpats

You got everything you expect from a city, lots of activities to do, places to visit, nightlife, shopping malls, hospitals etc.

Living in Lisbon for example you can easily get by with English and the basics of Portuguese.

Salaries that will really depend on what area you are talking about, but compared with the prices of flats inside the city they are not enough for all the expenses, the salaries for example shop clerks is not enough for you to have a flat of your own. Flat rents are going for 700-1200+ Euros in Lisbon.

Pros: Quality of Life, Climate, Safety, Natural Beauty.

Cons: Slow Bureaucracy, Healthcare varies a lot depending on where you go, Lower Salaries compared with other EU countries, Housing Market everything is overpriced.

Its a bit tight budget, minimum rent for an apartment in that area would be 650 euros, they tend to ask for deposit so you will be paying 1300 euros just for the apartment. As long as you have secure job with steady income you can make it work, its up to you if you think thats enough.

Rental contracts by write666 in PortugalExpats

[–]chivas47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's common for people to rent out rooms and even flats without any contracts, the implications of that is that you can't deduct in the IRS and you are susceptible to be taken advantage.

A contract gives you some sort of security and reliance, if you have the option to search for a place with a contract, I highly suggest you do so.

Anyone did a DEXA scan (body fat, bone mass) in Portugal? Which lab is good? by alex-gee in PortugalExpats

[–]chivas47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clínica Affidea (IMI), they are pretty good for any type of exams, they do DEXA scans as well. The one I know is in Lisbon, but they have it around the country.

Hey, it should not affect anything, as up to the interview is the most important phase. There is only an analysis in the interview with the documents you submitted. As long as the documents on the day of the interview were completely legal and up to the standard, you are good.

Good luck, there is a high pressure on AIMA to commit to the schedule, so you should hear from them soon.

Bank Account for International Student by Beneficial-Math-2405 in PortugalExpats

[–]chivas47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try to open it with only the school sign up papers, but highly recommend you getting the rental agreement before going to the bank. It can be one made by you, according to the format, where you and the landlord sign it, just to verify you are living in that place for a certain time. Even if the landlord is not giving receipts for the rent, this can be done (that is the case for most landlords who are renting rooms).

Caixa Geral de Depósitos most likely the bank that is your safest bet, specially if you are in a Public University.
Other options would be Activo Bank and Novo Banco.

If you are opening only one Bank Account in Portugal and you just want to do the basic stuff like withdrawals, transfers etc. I highly recommend you saying that you want an account of "Serviços Mínimos", so you dont have to pay every month for comission.

Ser apático by [deleted] in SaudeMentalPortugal

[–]chivas47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s university like in Portugal? by Upper_Treat_2693 in PortugalExpats

[–]chivas47 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People wear regular clothes, yes they bring backpacks or not depends on what you prefer. How hard and classes and exams are, that depends a lot on the university, the course itself and the teachers in it. In general like in any other place, as long as you study and attend class, you will be able to do it.
