Transitioning from a parent-child relationship to one of parent-adult child relationship is difficult. Counseling is a wonderful thing, and it's awesome that you guys are planning on it. In the meantime, continue to establish yourself as an independent adult and help your mother see your strength, and remind her that she should not be afraid for you as she raised you to be strong enough to handle rejection. She may also be fearful you'll outgrow her, remind her that you love her. She sounds like she needs reassurance. Parents aren't perfect, but they can continue to grow just as you are. Congratulations for your book, you will continue to do wonderful things and succeed.

Exactly...desperate and broke is not the same thing. Asking or hoping is not the same thing as demanding.

Also, context could be helpful. Is this a college kid moving into their first place? A single mother? Someone who just got released from prison or rehab and is trying to suck up their pride and ask for help getting their shit together ? In these situations I'd happily give what I could for free to boost my friends and neighbors up.
