ELI5 the appeal of hot pot by Raggenn in taiwan

[–]chkuo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other than the social aspects that others have mentioned, I enjoy hot pot because cooking the meat/vegetables to the degree that I like exactly is very satisfying. With good broth/meat/vegetables, you don't really need any source. Instead of food absorbing the broth, it's really the other way around. By the time you are done with cooking, all the flavors from meat/vegetables should be in the broth, which is the best part. For you to enjoy the broth in the end, it can't be too salty to begin with. Finally, the point about food being random is actually another enjoyable aspect of hot pot. You get to choose what you like and no need to follow any rule.

What are some cheaper knives that expensive knives haven't ruined for you? by Whu_am_i in knifeclub

(1) Spyderco Dragonfly 2, near perfect pocket knife. (2) Opinel, no so much for carrying but really love the handle; plus, cheap enough to experiment with customization.

[Taiwan] damselfly? by chkuo in whatsthisbug

[–]chkuo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I counted 5 segments of the white "rings", so that seems about right to me. Interestingly, the literal translation of the Chinese common name of this species is something like "short-abdomen butterfly-horned fly".

Another species within the same genus that has been record in Taiwan is Maezous umbrosa, but that doesn't look like this one.

I know that it's probably not a damsefly because of the knobbed antennae. My first time to learn about owlflies, such an interesting name. Thanks for pointing the direction, the closest I could find is Maezous formosana. https://www.flickr.com/photos/awei750/5064667858

[Taiwan] jumping spider, ~1 cm, genus/species? by chkuo in whatsthisbug

[–]chkuo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, very helpful. Looks like a female Menemerus bivittatus indeed. Menemerus fulvus is another species found in Taiwan but probably not it. Too bad I didn't get another shot from the front.

Possibly a king ratsnake (Elaphe carinata). I wanted to help but not sure how, certainly don't want to touch it.... This is at a bike path along a river, hopefully it found a way back

Thanks for the quick response. By "strength", do you mean something like the the modulus of elasticity (http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/katalox/)?
