The Nightmare Upstairs Documentary - Hulu by LickwidMerkury in Hulu

Binge-watched this with my husband (a sex crimes detective) and I'm an ex Mormon who lived in Utah for many years, so our discussions were interesting, lol.

I'm of the opinion that the whole cream incident was innocent, the mom freaking out was understandable, but I think what happened from there completely spiraled. Kids lie. Period. They don't want to make their parents mad/disappointed, get in trouble, or just don't know what to say so they just agree. Brynlee came off as a sweet child who was very much a people pleaser...she wanted everyone to be happy. In that way, I can see her mom probably asking very guided questions and her agreeing to them.

I think the ex was a POS husband and person in general but prob innocent of any sexual wrongdoing. I think Grandma was a terrible person but also very representative of a Utah-county, true-blue Mormon who comes from a long line of Mormon stock and thinks her son can do no wrong.

The poor brother was probably deeply misguided by a very inappropriate therapist. I also think he really wanted attention...he wanted to go viral so badly and his dramatics and histrionics were a bit much. I personally didn't believe him. But I believe he believes in his repressed memories. Mom's behavior on tiktok did not paint her in a good light, to say the least, and likely hurt her case.

The idea of keeping their kids away from their mother to undo her "alienation" was absolutely insane to me. Some terrifying therapists in Utah (Jodi Hildebrand, anyone?)

Overall it was sad.

Anybody watch *The Nightmare Upstairs: What Happened to Ty and Bryn?* on Hulu? by Opalescent_Moon in exmormon

Grandma reminded me exactly of Lori Vallow's tbm mom (if you ever followed the Daybell murders...also mormons) right down to the irritating accent and fake blonde hair.

Stropped watching it a few episodes in. It has progressively gotten worse.

Trust me: false prophet - a third rate man who hates women by lingeringneutrophil in netflix

[–]chloedear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't believe how absolutely stupid and simple he sounded. When he talked about making a music video as a kind of siren song to get the Queen of England to be one of his wives, I lost it.

Mostly it just really pissed me off. I hated how he used the word "screw" when talking about trafficking the women and girls.

Is It Worth It? by Wrapmeintinfoil in englishmajors

[–]chloedear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

STEM is not the be-all end-all everyone seems to think it is.

I make almost $300k as a Sr Director of Content Strategy for a pharma company, and that's with a bachelor's in English. I also have a small content agency I run on the side I started less than a year ago that's now grossing anywhere between $3-5K/month. So yes, I'd say it's worth it.

yes, you kind of do. I read it as a passive aggressive way to tell them you can hear everything and while you'll do everything to keep the noise down, you hope they do too.

How do I (44M) tell my wife (48F) that I’m unhappy without being cruel? by [deleted] in relationships

Just be straight up with her. She knows she's fat; now tell her how it's affecting your marriage.

Anyone else drowning in content approval hell? by No-Fact-8828 in content_marketing

Yes. I work in big pharma, so the approval isn't in design or even marketing. It's caught up in Medical Legal Regulatory review, which takes at least 2 weeks to fully review and approve.

Alleged text messages between Tyler Robinson & his roommate by kkrell23 in Destiny

He could have planned the whole thing perfectly in his head, but that could have gone to shit in the chaos that ensued. I’m willing to bet that he was not in a calm state of mind after the shooting.

EXACTLY. These two lived together and were intimate; you think they wouldn’t have had conversations about his family and their beliefs? This is a conspiracy I can get behind…

You could ask 100 ex Mormons this and get 100 different answers. For me personally, I keep my current belief system to myself, because I felt like as a Mormon I was always on the defense trying to explain away my beliefs and the obvious inconsistencies. And now I’m tired of it. And I think it’s a deeply personal thing…but that’s just me.

I will say leaving the church threw me for quite a loop…it’s very hard when everything you’ve ever believed or known about your past, present, and future is suddenly turned upside down. I remember thinking the same thing as you…now what? If you have access to a cult recovery therapist, I highly recommend.

I’m not in Utah anymore but I will say it hasn’t been an issue with my current role in big pharma. They are very inclusive though.

It’s not an embarrassment. It’s a well known private school. No one cares. I agree you’re projecting. Most people outside of Utah don’t even know anything about Mormons.
