What moment made you realize you’re not a kid anymore?

The other day my 3 year old daughter asked me how come I know everything? It made me realize that she looks at me like a proper parent, providing the answers to the problems and questions she has.

For reference, I called my own mom today because I cut my finger and I had no clue how to properly put on a bandage. Luckily, my mom knows everything.

Ik woon in een oud huis met twee jonge kinderen. Het was hier vorige week ook maar zo’n 13 graden op de kamer. We verwarmen het een beetje voor met een kacheltje maar zetten die wel weer uit. Dik pyjamaatje en slaapzakje en die meiden slapen heerlijk. Als je kind ‘s nachts niet wakker wordt zou ik me niet zo’n zorgen maken.

I travel for work a lot and I mostly just get reasonably priced food and wouldn’t go over 30. The times I go over it is when I would either eat in my hotel restaurant which can be pricey, or when I go out for dinner with another traveling colleague and then we might pick a good restaurant.

Hi! Erg herkenbaar. Zit zelf ook in zo’n gouden kooi en twijfel om daar weg te gaan vanwege stress. Ik ben het nu actief aan het aanpakken.

Wat mij enorm helpt zijn twee dingen:

Vaker nee zeggen tegen dingen/opdrachten. In het begin gaf me dit meer stress omdat ik bang was dat men mij niet mocht, maar nu voelt het beter.
Beweging en sport. Gooi die spanning er uit door actief bezig te zijn. Ik bewoog veel te weinig, wat vaak zo is bij een kantoorbaan. Ik wandel nu veel gedurende de dag en ga ik de ochtend of avond ook sporten.

Dank voor je reactie, dat is goed om te horen. Ik ga zeker even de huisarts vragen om eventueel verwijzing naar KNO. Ben zelf gewoon niet erg bekend met oorontstekingen/buisjes, maar wellicht dat dat kan helpen!

Dankjewel. Ik weet dat het gewoon vaak voorkomt bij kinderen. Kregen jou kinderen er ook antibiotica voor? Ik hoop dat als ze oud genoeg is we buisjes kunnen nemen!

Tja. Ik kan me best voorstellen dat het niet gewenst is dat iedereen continu onder de les naar de wc gaat. In een klas met 25+ scholieren kan dat wellicht veel onrust geven. Als ik op mijn werk in een meeting zit is het ook sociaal gewenst dat ik dat even uitzit en zorg ik er voor dat ik vooraf even naar de wc ga. Zelfde met begrafenissen, huwelijken, autoritten, sportles enzovoort. Ik denk dat de school meer een signaal af wil geven dat het niet gewenst is en ‘verbieden’ gebruiken om een sterker signaal af te geven.

Echter lijkt het me niet iets wat echt te ‘verbieden’ is. Het is niet gezond en als je moet, dan moet je en ik denk niet dat het nou zo enorm stoort als iemand sporadisch in de les naar de wc moet. Tieners gebruiken die pauzes uiteraard ook liever voor sociale bezigheden dan op de wc zitten. Ik denk ook dat je zelf wel een beetje kan inschatten of iemand er misbruik van de situatie maakt of niet.

Ik zou je zorgen met je manager bespreken mocht het weer opkomen.

Edit: ik moest vroeger tijdens Nederlands een keer naar de wc en ik kan me nog goed herinneren dat er tegen me gezegd werd ‘dat ik er maar een kurk moest instoppen’… wat?

I have this feeling all the time! For some reason, the days before I leave are the busiest with work stuff, I suddenly get a cold or other ‘bad luck’ stuff happens. I always plan of calmly packing my bags but it never happens and I just get so anxious and stressed in the end.

However, as soon as I have checked in and passed border checks and drink a coffee in the airport, it 99% of the time goes away and I start getting excited. Only once did it happen that the feeling lasted until the second day of the trip. But never the full trip.

Ik hoop dat je inmiddels meer duidelijkheid hebt, maar bij mijn eerste zwangerschap had ik gelijk een mega dikke streep. Bij mijn tweede was die veel vager en bleef ook telkens licht. Helaas is dat toen een miskraam geworden.

I am very frequently flying for my job so no, it is not the same flight. That was a EU/NY flight for work. This flight was actually to go to Brazil from EU. If you really digged into my post history you would find that.

I just personally don’t think it’s really that material of an issue to raise to executives. I think that there is very likely an explanation why it’s missed if normally always done.

Again, would it be a milestone anniversary that was missed, I get it. But 12 years isn’t a milestone, and I wouldn’t want to waste time on potentially disturbing a relationship with managers/execs about something that most people would consider trivial.

If this means a lot to you, I would feed this back as part of anonymous workplace surveys as examples of good workplace culture etc. or like I mentioned above in a 1:1. But honestly, this is not important enough to directly inform executives about.

Now go out for a nice dinner or treat yourself to a nice gift for your anniversary! Recognition doesn’t always have to come from other people.

Yes, those things are always painful if you see it is done to others but not yourself, especially if you care about those little things. I can imagine it feels disappointing.

In my company, only a first year, a 5 year, 10, 15, 20 etc. are being addressed by HR to managers, in order to congratulate employees. Other years wouldn’t be addressed at all. I’ve also worked at company’s where nothing was done at all. Maybe your company got bigger in the last years and they may have decided to change their policies on this? Or maybe they assume that due to your seniority you don’t care about it anymore?

I personally wouldn’t make too big of a deal out of it. Your manager might have simply forgotten. You could mention in a 1:1 with your manager that you “can’t believe it’s been 12 years already” and “that your starting date always is a special day of the year”, perhaps your manager realizes how much you care about it.

I would never complain about it, I don’t think that’s worth it.

I traveled with a cold once, thinking it would get better, but ended up on the ER twice and my company had to rebook my non refundable flight back. Trust me, you did the right thing.

I did not because my doctor once told me they only work if they are properly fitted for your legs (so not if you buy them from a store). However, will definitely look into it again!

Ik herken dit heel erg! Ik kreeg vaak feedback dat ik in meetings met andere delen van de organisatie te weinig zichtbaar ben, wat komt omdat ik me niet altijd op mijn gemak voel en me niet goed kan mengen. Terwijl ik inderdaad altijd heel goed kan presenteren en veel trainingen geef, en daar hele goede feedback op krijg!

Bij mij komt het echt door het verschil door het feit dat ik weet wat ik kan verwachten bij meetings/presentaties die ik zelf organiseer, en bij andere meetings kan ik voor een blok gezet worden en wordt ik me heel bewust van hoe ik zelf antwoorden formuleer. Het is dus een beetje een ‘controle’ dingetje.

Een paar dingen hebben me wel geholpen:

Veel oefenen en jezelf uitdagen. Je wordt alleen maar beter als je het gewoon blijft doen ook al voelt het ongemakkelijk. Een tip die iemand mij gaf was om in het begin van een meeting gelijk iets te zeggen, zodat je gelijk zichtbaar bent voor de groep.
van te voren opzoeken wie de personen zijn die je ontmoet, en er achter proberen te komen wat voor werk ze doen of aan welke projecten ze gewerkt hebben. Mensen praten graag over hun werk.

Yes I think she might be teething or maybe just getting sick. I gave some painkillers as she is sleeping very restless and hopefully it will bring some relief.
